A Giant problem we are Kelping to solve 🌊 These beautiful Giant Kelp forests are home to many fish species, octopuses, sea stars and jellyfish. 🐙 But as our climate changes, warm waters, low nutrients and sea urchins have taken a heavy toll on this majestic species. Working with partners, we are testing whether genetic differences are connected with the Giant Kelp's ability to withstand warmer temperatures. Turtle-y committed to conserving Flatback Turtles. 🐢 The Flatback Turtle (Natator depressus) loves staying close to home. Flatbacks have the smallest geographic range of the world’s marine turtle species, sticking to Australia's sparkling coastal waters. These Aussie turtles face various threats, from climate change, habitat loss, pollution, and coastal development. But we're working with partners to conserve and protect them as part of our Flatback Futures project. The project, which is part of the Government of Western Australia's North West Shelf Flatback Turtle Conservation Program (NWSFTCP) combines information about the turtles and the community, acts on the results, and finds ways to adjust to change. Fighting frost for farmers. ❄️ Late spring frosts are becoming more frequent and more damaging due to climate change. And our vital food crops can't just throw on a woolly jumper! Our research with Grains Research and Development Corporation is seeking to enhance frost tolerance in wheat, investigating genes to determine what influences wheat frost sensitivity. Primed for success. 🔬 For research to be translated into impact, we need to ensure it's solving a genuine need. Our ON Prime 15 participants have been exploring the value of their research. This ship is the total package! 📦 A collaborative research team on our #RVInvestigator has just been delivered to Brisbane after a 27-day voyage studying massive seafloor canyons off Australia’s east coast. 🔬 They posted more than 150 science operations to gather data about how these canyons affect the flow of the East Australian Current (EAC) and influence marine life along the coast. Testing the waters. 🌊 We’re working with partners University of California, Merced, University of California, Davis and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) to test AquaWatch at the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta in California. AquaWatch uses satellites and water-based sensors processed with our advanced data hub to provide water quality updates and forecasts. Testing AquaWatch in California will help us improve the system back home and share insights with international experts tackling similar water quality challenges to us. From sensors tracking turbidity for Delta smelt to monitoring contaminants like mercury, AquaWatch contributes to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
