What building uses more energy: a parking garage or a self-storage facility? If you guessed parking garage, you’re right! The median parking garage in our sample uses nearly twice as much energy as the median self-storage facility: 32 kBtu of energy per square foot versus 17. These are median, weather-normalized source energy values pulled from thousands of U.S. parking garages and self-storage facilities that use EPA’s ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager® tool to track and manage their energy use. (Data is anonymous and not verified.) You can dig deeper into this and other data using our new Portfolio Manager Data Explorer tool at: https://lnkd.in/gyKHrnn2

I'm excited to share a pair of papers that came out on Friday. First, a new paper that I co-authored shows a practical way to coordinate supply and demand in our electricity grid. This method can efficiently schedule millions or hundreds of millions of water heaters, electric vehicle chargers, water pumps, home batteries, etc., to use power at the best time each day. You can read the report here: https://lnkd.in/g6mNUHqg Coincidentally, on the same day, @stanford-energy published a new paper showing that this type of coordination could save billions of dollars in upgrade costs in high-renewable power systems. Their report is here: https://lnkd.in/g3rsecNb). Scheduling electricity demand to match the supply of renewables and make the best use of infrastructure can dramatically reduce the cost of decarbonization, and now we have a practical way to do that. Would love to hear your thoughts on this.

I'm joined on this episode of Hidden Forces by electricity and data center industry veteran Brian Janous to discuss the electricity demand growth anticipated by the rapid buildout of AI data centers, the onshoring of new industrial capacity, and the introduction of more intermittent sources of energy like wind and solar onto the grid. The first hour begins with a conversation about electric power and what we mean when we talk about “The Grid.” What are the important pieces that comprise the grid, how do they come together to support the functioning of a modern economy, and what are the challenges inherent in trying to update and expand such a complex and interconnected system? In the second hour, we discuss the planning and procurement process for new data centers and some of the opportunities that may exist to invest around this anticipated boom. We also discuss how a precipitous rise in electricity demand without a concurrent increase in new capacity could lead to substantial cost increases for households and a series of hard choices for policymakers and politicians facing angry constituents in the years to come. https://lnkd.in/gtdP9a8Y

Since I can’t seem to shake the energy industry. 😂 A new series: What I learned about energy this week. 1) EV adoption is happening so quickly in some cities where charging infrastructure hasn’t caught up that ‘sidewalk charging’ is a temporary, but creative solution. 2) Virtual power plants (VPPs) are a thing and the concept is fascinating. VPPs can be as simple as a group of households with smart thermostats, the only requirement is power from ‘the system’ is available to the grid on demand.

We're excited to share the findings from the “Cooling High Summer Electric Bills” survey, the second installment in the recently launched Smart Energy Snapshot Series. Based on an online survey of 1,516 consumers, the new research found that 60% of Americans would be willing to participate in a program where they voluntarily adjust their cooling system during the summer months. However, the survey found noticeably less interest in programs where electricity providers automatically adjust consumers’ thermostats. Only 31% of respondents stated that they would participate in this type of program.
