Since I can’t seem to shake the energy industry. 😂 A new series: What I learned about energy this week. 1) EV adoption is happening so quickly in some cities where charging infrastructure hasn’t caught up that ‘sidewalk charging’ is a temporary, but creative solution. 2) Virtual power plants (VPPs) are a thing and the concept is fascinating. VPPs can be as simple as a group of households with smart thermostats, the only requirement is power from ‘the system’ is available to the grid on demand.

Insulation is a valuable load-shaping resource and a critical example of a load-following VPP resource. Yes, you heard me right... Insulation is part of a VPP. It reduces the load during summer peaks (and future winter peaks if this electrification stuff keeps taking off).

The power grid is changing and needs to be smarter and more decentralized. Utilities are starting to implement Virtual Power Plant (#vpp) that can interact and control Distributed Energy Resources (DER, think of battery packs, electric car/bus chargers, solar panels, thermostats and heat pumps).
