We're currently witnessing a distinct backlash against DEIB. From critiques of "cancel culture" to discussions about "virtue signalling" and "performative allyship," the narrative is becoming increasingly complicated. Even the term "wokeness" brings with it a myriad of interpretations. Remember a time when DEIB topics barely registered in mainstream conversations? Now, they dominate. With this rise in prominence, there's a growing sentiment that DEIB might be a zero-sum game, a departure from the hopeful "rising tide floats all boats" philosophy. Let's pause and ask: Why has this shift occurred? How did the dialogue evolve to this point? Most importantly, how can we redirect these conversations in a positive manner? It's imperative that we remove fear from the discussion. By focussing on opportunities and potential growth, we can shift away from negativity.

"Today, we stand at the precipice of a critical juncture in our journey toward Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB). The point of no return is upon us. For too long, we have approached DEIB as a mere checkbox, a superficial effort to appear progressive. But true progress requires more than surface-level gestures. It demands genuine commitment, uncomfortable conversations, and unwavering action. #DEIB #InclusionRevolution #EqualityForAll"

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging Consultant, Global Educator, Community Builder, and Unflappable Optimist
Today is a GREAT day! My co-leads Anna Ettin, Rebecca Harris, and I just facilitated a call for 20 of our 200 practitioner members of the DE&I Ecosystem Community of Practice, which I founded 11 years ago. During the call, we supported and re-energized each other in navigating an increasingly complex and challenging environment for #DEIB. Some key takeaways from our DE&I practitioners: - Though many of us may have been hired for just one or two of our marginalized identities, we do our best work when we bring our full, authentic selves, all of our beautiful intersecting identities, to the table. - We're committed to leaning into nuance and discomfort, and proceeding fearlessly, on behalf of those who do not have our platform, especially those from historically marginalized and underrepresented groups. - This is hard, and sometimes isolating, work. The most important things we can do are to support each other and continuously seek out opportunities to do the important work of DEIB whenever, wherever, and however we can. #diversity #equity #incluison #belonging

In this week's Fast Company, IJM's John Tanagho asks the question: "Is society experiencing—on balance—more harm than good from the tech sector?" John shares 3 concrete ways that companies can help create a safer digital future—one where the innovative use of technology flourishes and the weaponizing of technology is thwarted. His top recommendations included: ✅ Consulting survivors to recognise the real-world impact of harm - and have insight develop more effective solutions (this was key in IJM's recent 'Scale of Harm' study with Rights Lab University of Nottingham) ✅ Utilising indicators and red flags developed by subject matter experts such as RedCompass Labs ✅ Collaborating with industry associations including WeProtect Global Alliance to ensure consistency in tackling the crime 'Addressing the global issue of child sexual exploitation online is not only the right thing to do but increasingly a legal and regulatory obligation across multiple jurisdictions. It’s also smart business. Whether we’re at a net deficit or headed toward one, it is in everyone’s interest to change course.' - John Tanagho, IJM's Center to End Online Sexual Exploitation of Children.
