Most SDR teams have 20% solid players, 40% "ok" players, and 40% waste of space players. You would be better off cutting the 40% bottom, forcing the 40% "ok" players into a pressure cooker to elevate up or self-select out, and turn your top 20% into absolute monsters by throwing the house at them with enablement. As a future SDR , what I’ve learnt from talking to current sdrs is that the company you start with does in fact matter . Under-selling yourself in the name of, it being your first role, while pivoting into tech is a myth. Knowing your value helps you weed out companies you know you could possibly grow with at the early stage.

Here’s my recommendation for SDR comp model: High ticket -> pay per mtg and small kicker on rev Low ticket -> pay per revenue. Commission or flat fee. If you have a fast sales cycle.. get everyone aligned on revenue. 45 days or less. 30 days or less. If you have a slower sales cycle… 90-150-365… pay per mtg. Incentive growing account or getting more ppl to show up w rev kicker. Every biz and sales cycle is different. More books should highlight the diff comp models based on the diff sales cycles / biz models. What about you? How do you think SDRs should be comped? Lmk in comments below.

The single biggest mistake I made when it comes to SDR work: switching up my process too frequently. Don’t get shiny object syndrome. Commit to a process and stick it. Ended up as SDR of the Quarter for Q3 of 2023! Really stoked about this last quarter with Allego. Also excited to report that Melissa Merino can, in fact, be beaten. Despite totally dominating the last two quarters. 😜 Here are a couple things that made a difference for me in Q3: -Treating alignment with my AE like an on-going process. Tim Rajotte and I speak almost daily. Sometimes for 2 minutes sometimes for 20. But we’re constantly dialoguing over strategy and execution. -Making the “not yet’s” count. Sometimes it’s all a matter of timing. The notes you take on your “call back in 6 months” calls determine how those calls go down the road. Set yourself up for success. -Listen to the people who beat you every month. Like I mentioned before Melissa beat me all this year… so that’s who I spend my time listening to. Does your company have call Intel (if not, hmu)? If so, who do you want to be selling like next quarter? Absorb what they do to set themselves apart and PRACTICE. 2023 has been a wild ride. We’re almost to the end. Let’s crush 24!!
