🌟 Honoring Mothers: Reflecting on Gender Equality 🌟 As we celebrate Mother's Day, I find myself reflecting on the invaluable lessons my own mother taught me about equality and respect. Raised by a single mother, I learned early on that domestic chores were not solely the responsibility of women but a shared duty among all family members. This upbringing instilled in me the importance of treating everyone with respect, regardless of gender, race, or any other factor. Entering the professional world at P&G, I carried these principles with me. Working alongside diverse teams with over 50% female representation, I believed I embodied the values of equality and inclusion. However, it wasn't until a MARC workshop in Panama, a few years ago I truly grasped the depth of gender inequality. In just a few minutes, the workshop opened my eyes to the privileges I, as a man, had unknowingly enjoyed and the daily challenges women face, both personally and professionally. It was a sobering realization that despite my awareness, I had been a passive supporter rather than an active advocate for change. Mother's Day serves as a poignant reminder that there is always more to learn and do in the pursuit of true equality. Awareness and support are essential, but they must be accompanied by action. Let's honor the mothers in our lives by committing to being not just passive supporters, but active allies in the fight for gender equality. Together, we can create a more inclusive world for all. But we will not rest on our laurels. In an industry that is characterized by a fast pace and internationality, new challenges and issues are constantly arising. This year I celebrate 15 years working in Massmart Makro South Africa I vividly remember the day I walked into a Makro Store in Woodmead for the first time and I thought; "Wow this place is massive" Of course I still believe our organisation is massive, however, this is now relative because I know the corners and areas of function off by heart. I joined the organisation as a Cadet through the then Cadetship program, which allowed me the opportunity of working in all store departments. I was literally from Grade 12, filled with hope for a better future. One thing I carried close to my heart was how I needed to make my mother and father proud (who were then domestic workers and taxi drivers). Years later with POSTGRAD, short courses, a candidate for a Masters degree (All financed by the company), multiple relationships, and a wide range of organisational experience and knowledge, I can say have enjoyed my time in this organisation. I started as a child, got married here, had my first child, and now became a whole parent to five children!!! These are 15 pivotal skills I have learned in this company that I use outside of the company daily! 1. Communication 2. Problem solving 3. Empathy 4. Leadership 5. 50% of frontline retail workers are considering leaving their job* 😱 Said differently: your entire staff could turn over in the next 2 years. It reminds me of the Ship of Theseus paradox that's plagued me since high school: if you replace one piece of a ship over time until all parts have been replaced, is it still the same ship? High school philosophy aside, retailers replace their own ships every few years, but somehow still have to stay the course. How can anyone be expected to do this well? My two cents: use a compass. Instead of N-E-S-W, that compass should point you in one direction: "what matters most to my customers?"
