This means you'll likely be stronger on the backend (Node.js), but you may dabble in some React/Typescript frontendy stuff too. U.S. only, but it is remote. I’ve been trying a few digital/nfc business cards this week ahead of some business travel. This is completely unsolicited promotion. I am super impressed with Blinq. The app and website JUST WORK. That is far too rare and is comment worthy. The website also works well on mobile. And there is an Apple Watch app to share your QR card 🙌 And I connected it to an NFC card that originally linked to worse digital software. AND THAT JUST WORKED 🤯 Looking forward to using it at #RenderATL and #MACH3

While I do love a more GUI focused editor (dangers of leadership and less coding folks 🤣) this article hits the nail on the head for tooling. I want things to just work (as I understand them already) as much as possible with things like CLIs. Also yes TCL was real in that story! I was there :oldperson:

This is a great essay. And something I've been talking about with startup folks here in the UK a lot more in the last few years. And why I celebrate those who are doing things differently. The ex Monzo and GoCardless crews are some of those. My value comes in execution of engineering orgs, and I'm not naturally a founder. But it makes me sad that the companies I've found the best fit at are all US based. Yes, I love working with globally distributed teams so that is an added bonus but I wish the UK had more ambition. For those without privilege I know it's hard. I could never have done it back in the day. But it's also an important message to investors and those who do found things. Take some risks. Shoot for the moon! You never know what might happen 🚀

Ryan has some solid advice here. A staff engineer is not just doing more senior level work.
5 abilities you need to be a Staff Software Engineer: 1: Understand and calculate business impact. 2: Generate opportunities and build buy in from stakeholders. 3: Design processes which encourage others to lead but not directly lead yourself. 4: Influence projects across realms of ownership involving many teams. 5: Create and understand organisational level success metrics. No one ever became a staff engineer by waiting for opportunities to come to them. You become a Staff Engineer by becoming an extremely competent senior and demonstrating these 5 abilities and more.
