Happy #TexasHornedLizardDay! Baby horned lizard season is already in full swing at San Antonio Zoo - we’ve had 38 hatchlings so far this year, with more to come! Stay tuned for updates! The iconic Texas horned lizard is the state reptile of Texas and was once abundant across the western two-thirds of the state. Since the late 1960s, horned lizard populations have declined or disappeared in many areas due to a variety of factors, including deterioration, fragmentation, and loss of habitat; non-native invasive species such as exotic grasses and red imported fire ants; and pesticide use. Many Texans have fond memories of the Texas horned lizard and wish for its return to its former abundance. The Texas Horned Lizard Reintroduction Project at Center for Conservation and Research (CCR) at San Antonio Zoo seeks to restore the Texas horned lizard population by working with private landowners to introduce zoo hatched lizards in areas where it has disappeared in recent decades. #conservation #texas #hornedlizard #sanantoniozoo

San Antonio Zoo is thrilled to announce a momentous contribution from the Texas Capital Foundation, Texas Capital’s nonprofit philanthropic entity. The esteemed financial institution has generously gifted $500,000 towards the Generation Zoo capital campaign, which will be distributed over five years, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of the zoo's facilities and offerings. This substantial donation from Texas Capital will serve as a cornerstone for the initial phase of the multi-year Generation Zoo project. The funds will be instrumental in revolutionizing amenities, improving animal habitats, and creating inviting gathering spaces throughout the zoo. Specifically, the donation will bolster key initiatives within the project, including establishing a world-class gorilla habitat named Congo Falls and developing a 500-person capacity event center called The Ralston. "The Texas Capital Foundation is proud to support the San Antonio Zoo with our contribution to the Generation Zoo Capital Campaign as it works to fulfill its mission to inspire the community to love, engage with, act for and protect animals and the places they live,” said Ricky Maldonado, Texas Capital San Antonio Market President. “We look forward to our continued partnership with the zoo as it helps serve our great city." Texas Capital has been a longtime supporter of San Antonio Zoo, having made contributions for more than 20 years to major initiatives and developments including Africa Live!, Will Smith Zoo School, Zoo Ball, and now, Generation Zoo. As part of the zoo's master plan, these enhancements are projected to total approximately $67 million. Phase one developments, including Congo Falls and The Ralston, are slated for a 2025 debut. Thank you to James and Parker for their generous donation to the Texas Horned Lizard Reintroduction Project! ❤️ After learning of the threats facing this iconic animal, James and Parker decided to go above and beyond for their school project. Not only would they inform their classmates about the Texas horned lizard - they were going to hold a fundraiser to support saving the species! After organizing a school wide fundraising campaign and holding a lemonade sale, these inspiring boys raised $566 to help Texas horned lizards. 👏 The Texas Horned Lizard Reintroduction Project is funded entirely by private grants and donations, and we couldn’t do it without the generous support from conservationists like James and Parker! 🌎💚

San Antonio Zoo hosted its highly anticipated 9th annual Education 2 Conservation Celebration Luncheon on Tuesday, April 30, where the prestigious 2024 Conservation Award was presented to two deserving individuals who have made significant contributions to conservation efforts. The event's highlight was the 2024 Conservation Award given to Ivan Carter, a renowned environmental advocate who has dedicated his work to spotlighting wildlife and inspiring action towards protecting our planet's biodiversity. Ivan has been in the television production arena as a television show host for almost a decade. He is currently filming the fourth season of Defenders of the Wild, a series exploring the planet to find solutions to create a balanced wildlife ecosystem. Ivan's remarkable efforts in bringing the beauty of wildlife and wild places to global audiences have been instrumental in raising awareness for conservation causes. "One of the greatest threats to wildlife is the thought that someone else will save it - don't forget anybody can be a conservationist," said Ivan Carter, 2024 Conservation Award recipient. In a surprise announcement, Brooke Carter, daughter of Ivan Carter and host of the TV show Wild Wonders with Brooke, was also honored with an honorary 2024 Conservation Award for her commitment to promoting the importance of conservation among the next generation of wildlife enthusiasts in South Africa and around the world. "I can change the world, and so can you," said Brooke Carter, honorary recipient of a second 2024 Conservation Award. Throughout the past year, San Antonio Zoo has experienced remarkable growth & success, including introducing new attractions and significant conservation milestones such as the successful birth of 47 critically imperiled Oklahoma Cave Crayfish – this is the first time this species has ever been reproduced in the care of humans. With the Oklahoma Cave Crayfish, the Center for Conservation & Research at San Antonio Zoo embarked on a capture-mark-release-recapture project to determine population size, longevity, and habitat use. During their latest visit, the team recaptured babies, and they are 90% certain they are from crayfish previously released "We are thrilled and proud to have passionate conservationists like Ivan and Brooke leading the way in protecting our planet's precious ecosystems and wildlife, inspiring us all to take action towards a more sustainable future," said Tim Morrow, President & CEO of San Antonio Zoo.
