When you’re driving the wrong way, it doesn’t matter how fast you’re going. This is the critical difference between engineering efficiency and engineering effectiveness. 🏎️ Lead time will clock your speed ⛽️ Deployment frequency will measure your MPG ⚠️ MTTR and change failure rate will tell you if the check engine light is on …but those metrics don’t tell you where you are on the map when it comes to delivering on commitments or delivering business value. It’s critical to make sure you’re going in the right direction, which is why you also need insight into time allocation: 🔥 Are you working on the right initiatives? (Does everyone know and/or agree that these are the right initiatives?) 🔥Are you sustainably balancing new value and tech debt/KTLO? 🔥 Is your team focusing on heading west — or north, south, and east too? Make sure you’re gaining alignment on business priorities first — within and across teams. THEN you can step on the gas. #dorametrics #KTLO #engineeringleadership

When you’re driving the wrong way, it doesn’t matter how fast you’re going. This is the critical difference between engineering efficiency and engineering effectiveness. Efficiency and quality metrics like DORA are only half the equation. Lead time will clock your speed, deployment frequency will measure your MPG, and MTTR and change failure rate will tell you if the check engine light is on… but those metrics don’t tell you where you are on the map when it comes to delivering on commitments or delivering business value. It’s critical to make sure you’re going in the right direction, which is why you also need insight into time allocation: ✅ Are you working on the right initiatives? (Does everyone know and/or agree that these are the right initiatives?) ✅ Are you sustainably balancing new value and tech debt/KTLO? ✅ Is your team focusing on heading west — or north, south, and east too? Make sure you’re gaining alignment on business priorities first — within and across teams. THEN you can step on the gas. 🔥 #dorametrics #KTLO #engineeringleadership
