Volley's Co-Founder and CEO Max Child recently sat down with Alexandra Takei to discuss the future of gaming, innovations in voice tech, and what’s next for our company. Check out the link below to listen!
🗣 Do you play mouse & keyboard or controller? Are you into motion sensors or own hardware for Guitar Hero? Games have spanned a variety of input controls, but one of the oldest is our voice. Played Marco Polo in the pool? Sang Karaoke at your local bar? These are all examples of voice games and Max Child, CEO and Co-Founder at Volley who recently raised a $55M Series C co-led by Lightspeed and M12, Microsoft's Venture Fund, joins me on air to talk about voice games in video games. 🏋♂️ Although there are few “breakout hits” in voice so far, here are some heavy hitters: Shout to Jump — a platformer, where you literally, shout into your phone, to jump Question of the Day — trivia game on Amazon Alexa Song Quiz — music trivia for Amazon Alexa (acquired by Volley) Voice has had technical hurdles in the past across speech recognition, speed of conversation, and fundamental linguistic issues in the ability to interpret intent. But just like Nvidia’s graphics cards supercharged 3D storytelling and better motion feedback and haptics turned novelties like the Sony Eye Toy into the Wii and VR, advancements in AI are allowing the merging of speech recognition and LLMs (having audio and text in one system) that are changing future outlook of the voice games landscape. 🔊 We discuss: The history of voice games Platforms for voice games Technology that makes voice games fly The Volley portfolio and Volley’s core user base and demo The business of voice (business models, retention, platform mix, and top-end monetization) Listen to the full episode on Naavik's channels on Apple, Spotify, or YouTube, linked in the comments. If you’re looking to learn more about why Lightspeed and Microsoft invested, give Lightspeed's blog post on the fundraise a read: https://lnkd.in/e2Ght8Es. Thanks to Gaby Caliendo for helping us put this together. #gaming #voice

Please join us in welcoming Volley's new Director of Engineering, Rod Begbie! What inspired you to start a career in your line of work? I was given my first computer (a Sinclair ZX Spectrum 48k) in 1983, and it’s all followed on from there. I was lucky — As a scruffy, spectacles-wearing, nerdy boy, I fit the most stereotypical image of a programmer, so society gave me the privilege to always feel comfortable pursuing it. Now I try to invest time and energy in encouraging folks who don’t match the stereotype to explore and take on this exciting, collaborative and impactful career path. What are you looking forward to most about working at Volley? Bringing fun games to smart TV platforms. Millions of households have a smart TV but no games console. Giving them the opportunity to feel like a real gameshow contestant, shouting “What is The Olympic Games?” or “I’d like to solve the puzzle” as they play Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune is terrifically rewarding. And building these games is no easy matter — so solving the hard technology problems to make them fun and accessible will be a challenge I’m excited to take on. As the old saying goes, it takes a lot of effort to make things look effortless!

At Volley, we believe in the importance of rest and rejuvenation. That’s why we offer 4 paid weeks of vacation annually to all our employees. But here’s the kicker – we strongly encourage everyone to take at least 2 of those weeks off! By encouraging time away from work, we support a healthier, happier, and more productive team. It’s not just about working hard – it’s about balancing dedication with relaxation. Ready to join a company that values your well-being as much as your work? Volley is Hiring!
