Clean Energy Entrepreneurship at Argonne National Laboratory
About us
Chain Reaction Innovations (CRI) is a two-year entrepreneurship program at Argonne National Laboratory for early-stage startups focusing on clean energy and climate change technologies. The program is one of four Lab-Embedded Entrepreneurship Programs (LEEP) supported by the U.S. Department of Energy. Program fellows receive financial and technical support to mature technologies that face long development timelines, getting them to the point where they can access conventional financial support to scale and launch into the marketplace. CRI’s ability to embed innovators at Argonne and provide multi-faceted two-year support sets it apart from incubators, accelerators and R&D fellowships.

Welcome Our Amazing Summer Interns! 🎉 What a busy past seven weeks since we’ve onboarded our fabulous four Students for Energy and Entrepreneurship (SEED) Summer 2024 interns. They are joining us for an exciting journey filled with learning, innovation, and fun! Let’s give a warm welcome to Natalie Salas, a rising senior chemical engineer at the University of Illinois Chicago (working with Aquora Biosystems), Ariel Luecke, a rising senior engineering management also at University of Illinois Chicago (working with Helix Earth Technologies, Benjamin Dam, a rising sophomore at the City Colleges of Chicago studying computer science (working with Good Fibes Inc.), and Jacob Morales-Makescoldweather, a rising junior also at City Colleges of Chicago majoring in legal studies (working with Rivalia Chemical Co.). The interns have kicked off their individual and group projects and made great strides thus far. Additionally, they’ve been able to learn about Argonne National Laboratory and connect with the Greater Chicago ecosystem and understand CRI’s role in the community. We’re so excited to see what these talented individuals will accomplish over the summer! Thanks to Dira "Mel" Delpech and Deena Wright for being SEED mentors.

Innovation is critical to CRI's success. That's why we were pleased to receive a Chicago Innovation award last November and celebrate it by having CRI's Director Dick Co and Argonne National Laboratory Director Paul K. Kearns ring the Nasdaq bell this morning. It takes a village, truly, to make impact for our startups and we are grateful for all who are part of the CRI program! CRI is one of four Lab-Embedded Entrepreneurship Programs (LEEP) supported by the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE), U.S. Department of Energy.

This was a wonderful collaboration and a very enjoyable event!
The Postdoctoral Society of Argonne and the Postdoc Program Office were pleased to host Dick Co yesterday for a talk for postdocs on how the entrepreneurial mindset can help you advance your career (even if you don't want to start a business :)). One of the things he talked about was essentialism and that you have a choice in what you say yes or no to. It's an important skill for anyone to learn. This was just one of the many key messages he shared with postdocs! Dick writes regularly on LinkedIn. Give him a follow for these nuggets of wisdom! #postdocs #entrepreneurship #mindset #learning #careerdevelopment

Great news from Cohort 5 startup Phase3D and its CEO and founder Niall O'Dowd, PhD! What a milestone achievement for AM.
Phase3D is the First In-situ Monitoring Company to Correlate AM Build Anomalies to Part Defects for the United States Air Force and NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration! This is a MASSIVE step forward for the AM industry as now users can understand part quality as the parts are being printed using quantifiable, repeatable data. Phase3D has worked closely with the U.S. Air Force and NASA to develop Fringe Research, which measures, in microns, every layer of a powder-based AM build using structured light. For AM to change the world and become a trusted manufacturing process, the industry must validate the build process in real time. Phase3D stands apart from any other in-situ monitoring product on the market with its trusted measurement technology. Come to Booth 1063 at RAPID + TCT next week to learn more about the work Phase3D is doing with it's customers! Message us directly or Noah Mostow to schedule a meeting. A big thank you to the folks at the United States Air Force, NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration, NASA Marshall Space Flight Center, Air Force Research Laboratory, and University of Dayton Research Institute. Additional shout out to the Phase3D team, Niall O'Dowd, PhD, Alex Samra, John Dailey, Scott Monaghan, Leo Manola, Noah Mostow, and the many more who worked on this project.
