  2. Sutton's predictions - Quarter-finalspublished at 15:57 5 July

Netherlands v Turkey, (Sat) 20:00 BST

Chris Suttons BBC Sport column header

What a game Turkey's last-16 win win over Austria was.

I loved the way Turkey fought to get over the line against Austria - and they did it without their captain, Hakan Calhanoglu, who was suspended for that game but will be back for this one.

The Netherlands have to be favourites here, though. With players like Nathan Ake and Virgil van Dijk at the back and Cody Gakpo and Xavi Simons going forward, they have quality all over the pitch.

    Sutton's prediction: Netherlands 2-1 Turkey

  3. Sutton's predictions - Quarter-finalspublished at 15:55 5 July

England v Switzerland, (Sat) 17:00 BST

    BBC Sport Chris Sutton header

Switzerland are another well-balanced team. They have belief in the way they play, and they seem to be getting stronger as the tournament goes on, as we saw when they beat Italy in the last 16.

There are still plenty of areas where England need to get better. At the moment, there is not much point dwelling on that. It is all about getting through this game, and England can do it.

    Sutton's prediction: England 1-0 Switzerland

    Portugal v France, 20:00 BST

Chris Sutton official BBC Sport column header

I picked France to win Euro 2024 before a ball was kicked and I am not going to change my mind now. They were not exactly exciting against Belgium in the last 16, but there were signs that they are coming to life, and they look so solid defensively.

We know what a great player Ronaldo has been in the past, and he can still influence games, but you have got to draw the line when it is clear he is having a negative impact on the team.

    Sutton's prediction: Portugal 0-2 France

Spain are the best team in the competition.

Germany were jubilant when Niclas Fullkrug scored their stoppage-time equaliser in their final group game against Switzerland, but they will be gutted that it meant they ended up in this side of the draw. They would rather be playing England, I'm sure.

Spain are going to be difficult to stop. If there is a criticism of them at these Euros, it is that they have not been ruthless enough, but, in terms of performance levels, they have been head and shoulders above everyone else.

    Sutton's prediction: Spain 2-1 Germany

  6. France players pose in their original club shirtspublished at 15:47 5 July

    John Bennett
    BBC World Service Sport

In the lead up to their quarter-final tonight, the French football Federation have released a brilliant group photo of the squad wearing the shirts from their first ever football clubs.

It must be an amazing feeling for some of the volunteers, coaches and young players from these mostly amateur sides across the country, being put on display by huge stars like Kylian Mbappe, William Saliba and N'Golo Kante.

The strength of youth football, particularly in the Paris area, is one of the big reasons why France are always challenging for trophies.

In fact, at the last World Cup, there were 30 players originally from the Paris area taking part in the tournament.

Many were in the France squad but there were also Parisian players in the squads of eight other national teams.

Earlier this year, we made an audio documentary to find out why Paris seems to be football's greatest talent factory. You can listen here.

  7. Mbappe v Ronaldo: Real Madrid past and presentpublished at 15:45 5 July

    Portugal v France (20:00 BST)

Split screen of Kylian Mbapped and Ronaldo

Kylian Mbappe says it is "an honour" to play against Cristiano Ronaldo as France prepare to take on Portugal in their Euro 2024 quarter-final.

France and Portugal face-off in the quarter-finals of Euro 2024.

While world-class players will be in action all over the pitch for both sides, it is hard not to focus on this match being a gladiatorial duel between two particular stars, Ronaldo and Mbappe.

So, the stage is set at the Volksparkstadion stadium in Hamburg tonight. A former Real Madrid legend against someone who hopes to achieve that status. Let's take a look at how they compare.

    • By 2010, Ronaldo had won three Premier League trophies, a Champions League and his first of five Ballons D’Or.
    • Mbappe in comparison has seven Ligue 1 titles, albeit six of them in a PSG side with vastly greater resources than their competitors in France, and no Champions League trophy yet.
    • Ronaldo scored 33 goals in 35 games during his first season at Madrid - a tally Mbappe surpassed in five of his seven campaigns at PSG, and which seems eminently reachable in 2024-25.
    • Mbappe has scored 287 goals in his club career to this point, while Ronaldo netted just 118 before joining Madrid.

This match is being shown live on BBC One and BBC iPlayer from 19:20 BST on Friday evening.

There is live commentary on BBC Radio 5 Live with build-up from Kelly Cates kicking off at 19:30 BST.

Former Portugal winger Nani says he has not been too impressed with his national side's performance so far at Euro 2024 but hopes tonight's quarter-final against France will spark their tournament into life.

"I am happy we are here, we always want to be with the main teams in the tournament - we want to entertain, we want to be the team who are favourites, but at this moment we didn’t feel that," he said. "

"Maybe tonight we have the opportunity to change all this mentality. It will be a great match, difficult for both teams - they will lose a lot of energy, there is a lot of talent and power to put on the field, and both teams until today have not shown the best they can produce."

Nani knows Cristiano Ronaldo well, having played with him at Manchester United as well as his country, and they were part of the same team that won Euro 2016. He says the 39-year-old will use tonight's match to silence any talk about whether he warrants a place in the side.

"He is a special player, a player who can create a lot of emotions," said Nani. "So it is normal when things are not going so well from his side - everyone is expecting him to score goals, that’s his job, he is a striker, so it can make him down a little bit.

"But I believe he is more confident for the next matches and tonight he can change all this energy."

Nani also says Ronaldo won't linger on his penalty miss against Slovenia in the last round.

"I believe he is strong enough with all his experience," he added. "I would not say it didn’t take him a little bit down - yeah, for sure, he was thinking for two days - but for tonight he is already over it, that situation has passed so he is already excited for the match.

"We footballers are like that, he is just waiting for an opportunity to score or win the game and change the sensations, the feelings, the thoughts. When you lose a penalty, such an important penalty in that game, it will hurt you a little bit but it will not stay forever because we have another game to play. I believe tonight will change all the thoughts about Ronaldo."

    Spain v Germany (17:00 BST)

Tonight's quarter-final sees Spain and Germany face off in a repeat of the 2008 semi-final between the two nations.

Spain came out on top 16 years ago with a 1-0 victory, all thanks to Fernando Torres' goal, and went on to win their first European title.

It was the start of a golden era for the Spain national team that included three consecutive tournament wins, with the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and 2012 Euros in Poland and Ukraine to follow.

If the rumours of a 3-4-2-1 are correct, we could finally see England playing to Foden and Bellingham's strengths. Mainoo and Rice keeping it disciplined in the middle with Foden and Bellingham given freedom is an absolute dream. Fingers crossed we see it and it pays off.

  17. 'Spain possibly a little further along the road than Germany'published at 14:58 5 July

    Spain v Germany (17:00 BST)

    Thomas Hitzlsperger
Former German football midfielder on BBC Two

German football is different now too, however, and in a good way.

That Spain team was actually kind of the role model for how we play now because we want to have possession and, when we lose the ball, we want to win it back.

So, rather than two teams with very different playing styles as it was in my day, Germany and Spain are now quite similar.

Individually, player by player, Spain are possibly a little further along the road than we are, but then Luis de la Fuente has been in charge since December 2022 while for Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann it is only around nine months.

Just because Spain are a little bit of us ahead like that, it does not mean they will automatically go on and win this game, and I don't think our recent record against them is relevant either.

What this England team needs is unity and togetherness. You don't get that by overhauling the entire line up for the most important game of the tournament. Expect minimal changes and a focus on tactics rather than personnel changes. I think the only change we will see is Marc Guehi out for Konsa.

  19. 'Spain were Germany's role model - now we believe we can beat them'published at 14:44 5 July

    Spain v Germany (17:00 BST)

    Thomas Hitzlsperger
    Former German midfielder

Whenever Germany play Spain it feels like a meeting of two footballing superpowers but Friday’s Euro 2024 quarter-final is especially exciting because of how well both teams are playing.

A lot of talk here in Germany has been about this being an early final, between the two best sides in the tournament, and I would agree with that from what I've seen.

There is a real belief that we can beat them, too. There is a lot of respect for this Spanish team from our fans and even the Germany players realise they are excellent, but that is balanced by us being the hosts and also by our own performances so far.

In terms of mentality and quality, it feels quite a level contest. I don't feel either side will fear one another, and it is going to be fascinating to see how the tie plays out.
