In 2020, the European Union alone generated an estimated 6.95 million tons of textile waste, with 82% being post-consumer waste, and the remainder originating from manufacturing or unsold textiles. Only a small fraction was reused or recycled; the majority ended up in landfills, often abroad, or incinerated. The consumption of clothing and footwear is expected to increase by 63% by 2030. This is known as the textile waste crisis, and it is accelerating. But what led us into this situation? How did we end up with so much waste that we don’t even know what to do with it? Part of the answer goes through answering another question: are clothes recyclable? The answer is more complex than you might think. Did you know that 1 t-shirt made from 30% Recover recycled cotton and 70% conventional cotton saves up to 87 liters of water and 0.7kg of CO2 emissions? This was one of the insights that surprised the fashion students from Alcoy's School of Art and Design (EASDALCOI) who visited our Recover™ facilities a couple of weeks ago. During the visit, our People & Talent Manager in Spain, Estrella Mataix Ferrer, introduced our company and talked about our mission and values that guide our daily actions, finishing up with a tour of our factory. It was great to see that the students showed a lot of interest in learning about our recycling process, classification, and composition of clothing. Students walked away with a deeper understanding of the importance of recycling and how it can play a role in their future careers.
