I frequently use MSE to ask math questions. However, I'm not a native English speaker, and a lot of times I make minor grammar or spelling mistakes in my posts. Additionally, on occasion, I might forget to include crucial details in the initial question. This leads to me making several edits to my question after posting.

While the current system doesn't bump a question after edits after 5 minutes (they all count as one edit), it doesn't address minor edits that happen soon after posting. Bumping the question for these minor corrections can be disruptive for users browsing the front page.

Feature Request:

I propose adding an optional checkbox during the edit process. This checkbox would be labeled "Don't Bump Question (Minor Edit)".

Thinking more about this, this is a very bad Idea.

    $\begingroup$ That won't happen because it may help hide errors, abuse etc. if the post isn't bumped for community review. Even tiny edits may need review (e.g. recently someone changed one character (lowercased it) in my answer, which made the proof incorrect and, alas, the edit was roboreview approved) $\endgroup$

  • $\begingroup$ @BillDubuque I think this issue could be avoided if we allow users to edit their posts without Bumping after certain reputation say 100 and allow users to edit others post without Bumping after 10k + reputation It is funny because just now a user pointed out a fatal but minor typo on my question on this commnent, now I have to edit it $\endgroup$

    $\begingroup$ Unfortunately site reputation is not a reliable measure of knowledge, morals (or anything else), e.g. some of the highest rep (front page) users here have been involved in plagiarism, huge rep farming gangs, etc. $\endgroup$

    $\begingroup$ To paraphrase Ms Swift, this will never ever never happen. There are too many avenues for abuse, eg a spammer posts an answer, then edits in a spam link a month later; or a disgruntled user subtly vandalizes posts while rage quitting. Edits need to be visible. $\endgroup$

    $\begingroup$ @pie One thing is that I remembered them. But, for example, looking at the post tagged bumping+editing could be a reasonable step when searching for those questions. (Notice that you have several tab to choose there, including Score and Frequent - those sometimes return the questions that received substantial attention.) $\endgroup$

    $\begingroup$ When I began on MO I made sure I had a working Latex setup on my home desktop computer. I would type things in and show a preview. For more difficult posts, I would print out a page and go over it with pencil marks. These day, I imagine there is a similar way to get Mathjax on your home computer. Anyway, once perfect, I would copy and paste onto the site. Now I can post fairly intricate items by editing on the site, but that took years. $\endgroup$
