This week, we were honored to be included in the list of 25 semi-finalists to receive U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s Carbon Dioxide Removal Purchase Pilot Prize- with $50,000 going to each to help scale a diversity of carbon dioxide removal approaches. Funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the Carbon Dioxide Removal Purchase Pilot Prize allows companies to compete for the opportunity to deliver carbon dioxide removal credits directly to DOE. Up to 10 semifinalist teams will be chosen as grand prize winners, with each team receiving a Carbon Dioxide Removal Credit Purchase Agreement award of up to $3 million for the sale of their credits to DOE. Congrats to all the companies selected! https://lnkd.in/eF-e2wxh
About us
280 Earth is scaling carbon removal technology to meet the climate crisis head on. Incubated at Google X, The Moonshot Factory (Alphabet’s innovation hub), 280 Earth develops and grows technology to mitigate—and reverse—climate change. Our Direct Air Capture (DAC) system pulls CO2 permanently out of ambient air. 280 Earth is building solutions that remove excess CO2, produce fresh water, and run on waste heat. Our mission is to develop scalable solutions to the global CO2 imbalance, improving the climate for generations to come.

We are live in The Dalles! This is a momentous day for the team here at 280 Earth: we publicly announced today that our first Direct Air Capture project is operational, capturing CO2 from the air. We also announced today that we closed our Series B funding round, led by Builders VC, along with Gideon Yu and X, the moonshot factory. We are honored to be part of the fight to return the atmospheric CO2 in the air back to sustainable levels of 280 parts per million. Read all about it here! https://lnkd.in/gK-RcvT3

I am thrilled to share progress towards our 280 Earth mission: to return atmospheric CO2 levels to pre-industrial levels of 280 parts per million. We plan to commercialize our flexible, cost-efficient direct air capture (“DAC”) technology capable of extracting CO2 from the ambient air at large scale. 280 Earth’s technology was developed as a project within X, Alphabet’s Moonshot Factory (X, the moonshot factory), for almost five years under the leadership of tech pioneer jacques gagne and team. Huge thanks are in order for the many who have worked tirelessly to develop this technology and launch this company. Thank you, jacques gagne,Gideon Yu,John "Ivo" Stivoric,Astro Teller,Helen Riley,General Gus Perna,Jim Kim,John Pimentel,Urs Hölzle,Michael Terrell,Maud Texier,Randy Spock,Denmark West,Bryan Rubin,Anil Patel,Kate Brandt,Diana Skaar,Jodi Olson,Jessica Appelgren,David Jen,Patrick Spencer,Kristen Gil,Michelle Chang,Katie Snowball,Árni Jónsson As our executive chairman, Gideon Yu, said, "All the conservation efforts just serve to slow the amount of water that’s flowing into the bathtub. There’s also going to have to be a release valve." https://lnkd.in/gdvsKv_Q #carboncapture #carbonremoval #Google #280Earth #dac #directaircapture #moonshot

Great coverage on our most recent investment and GoogleX spin-out 280 Earth👇 Alphabet Inc. moonshot lab X, alongside Google’s co-founder, Sergey Brin, champions the advancement of carbon removal technologies with their support for 280 Earth, which leverages waste heat for direct air capture. 280 Earth announced a substantial $15 million from Catalyst4—a nonprofit initiated by Brin with proceeds from Tesla shares—and Builders VC, marking a significant bet on DAC technology by Sergey Brin and San Francisco 49ers co-owner Gideon Yu. The company's approach, utilizing waste heat from data centers for carbon capture, is underscored by the construction of its pilot facility adjacent to a Google data center in The Dalles, Oregon, aiming for an initial annual CO2 capture of 500 tons. Astro, who leads X, emphasized the company's role in fulfilling X's mission: “280 Earth is a great example of what the X, the moonshot factory was built for: inventing and testing radical new technologies to tackle the most complicated global challenges." Darren, CEO of 280 Earth and former X employee, articulated the startup’s cost-efficiency goals: "By using waste heat and operating at lower temperatures, we project that 280 Earth will be able to remove a ton of CO2 for $200 by 2028." Gideon reflects on the broader impact of carbon removal technologies: "All the conservation efforts just serve to slow the amount of water that’s flowing into the bathtub. There’s also going to have to be a release valve," positioning 280 Earth's technology as crucial for achieving significant emission reductions. #carboncapture #carbonremoval #Google #280Earth #dac #directaircapture Cleantech Group

‘Stealth’ no more! We are pleased to announce our lead investment in 280 Earth, a spin-out from Google's X, the moonshot factory, after several years of work and leadership from Darren Bonnstetter, jacques gagne, Gideon Yu and John Pimentel. The work having pioneered a low-temperature sorbent for efficient carbon capture, powered by industrial waste heat. It not only captures carbon effectively but also produces water for industrial cooling. This follows a series of exciting developments over the past few quarters in the broader carbon/direct air capture (DAC) sector, including the following 👇 🛢️ Oxy acquires Carbon Engineering for $1.1B to further its DAC technology 🌱 Amazon commits to DAC for net-zero by 2040 🌎 Deep Sky raises $57.5MM in Series A, planning to create gigaton-scale carbon removal facilities powered by renewables 💼 BlackRock to invest $550MM in Oxy Stratos project (the world’s largest DAC project) https://lnkd.in/gCwUVWZj #climate #directaircapture #carboncapture #google #alphabet #climatetech Lora Kolodny Katie Fehrenbacher

Second day on the West Coast, first day in the Bay Area. Jesper Møller Sørensen met with colleagues from Innovation Centre Denmark Silicon Valley and the office of Denmark's Tech Ambassador to talk about collaboration across the US, synergies and the role of the two offices, but more importantly to get to know colleagues based in the Valley. Continued the day at GoogleX 280 Earth impressive lab having important discussions with Darren Bonnstetter on direct air capture (DAC) in order to reduce CO2-emissions in the atmosphere, but also to make sure Danish companies play a role and support this technology with Danish innovation in the fight against climate change. The Ambassador ended the day in beautiful surroundings at the San Francisco Pier engaging in a roundtable talk with people from the administration, industry, civil society and academia reflecting on how to regulate AI, focusing on human rights and digital democracy without hurting the innovation.
