“Always be collecting dots so you can always be connecting dots.” The “dots” here are information you gather, and observations you make. As a CEO, collecting such “dots” includes discovering… • the unique abilities of your employees, • the kind of projects that energize them, and • the people they work well with. Connecting those “dots” allows you to put them in roles where they excel - where they produce their best and most rewarding work. The same process works for clients, too. Collecting “dots,” in this case, means discovering: • the mission they’re on as well as why they’re on it, • the key thing that matters to them when working with you, and • the people on your team they’ll immediately click with. Connecting these “dots” allows you to match your clients with the people on your team who can provide exactly what they want - the people who can meet, if not exceed their expectations, and who are going to be a joy for these specific clients to work with. In both cases, collecting and then connecting “the dots” leads everyone to be more productive, and to feel more understood and valued. It leaves everyone feeling more pleased, more satisfied, and more likely to do the same thing again. This is the foundation that thriving businesses are built upon and yet the process is simple enough. Just: • keep your eyes open, • collect the “dots” you notice in a place where you can review them, and then • set aside time to connect those “dots” to the profit of everyone involved. There’s more to the post than just that one sentence I pulled out of it, however - and it’s all good, too. But don’t take my word for it; read the whole thing for yourself whenever you're ready.
