The NCAA Division I council voted last week to remove use of cannabis products from the banned drug class for championships and postseason participation in football will be effective immediately. This follows several professional leagues making the decision to remove bans on cannabinoid products. MLB made the decision to remove cannabis from the banned substance list and players are no longer tested. The NBA no longer tests athletes for cannabis or cannabinoid products. The NHL does test for cannabis, however, they do not punish players if they test positive. The UFC has also removed cannabis and cannabinoid products from its list of prohibited substances for athletes. The significant amount of data supporting the benefits of cannabidiol (CBD) and other cannabinoids from cannabis for recovery and overall mental wellness has contributed to the change in position by the NCAA and most professional sports leagues. “The NCAA drug testing program is intended to focus on integrity of competition, and cannabis products do not provide a competitive advantage,” NCAA Council Chairman, Josh Whitman said in a statement released by the NCAA following the decision.  He went on to say, “The Council's focus is on policies centered on student-athlete health and well-being rather than punishment for cannabis use." At cbdMD, we understand the role cannabinoids, like CBD, play in recovery for athletes. cbdMD was the first CBD brand to offer three products with NSF’s Certified for Sport Certification. Our NSF Sport category offers a full suite of solutions for our customers including athletes, first responders, doctors, nurses, educators, tradespeople and anyone subject to a workplace drug test so they can focus on their mental health and recovery without fear of failing a drug test. For those without a concern about workplace or sports drug testing, cbdMD offers a line of full spectrum products ranging from microdose through high potency depending on the specific need. We’ve taken strides through our commitment to quality and science to offer products our customers can trust that are backed by rigorous studies. The results from our human clinical trial were published this week. They demonstrated our broad spectrum CBD, which is the core formula our NSF for Sports products were formulated with, has efficacy for pain. The study also indicated there may be mental health benefits as well: there was a trend for reduced “anger-hostility” for male subjects and a trend for lower “stress-anxiety” for female subjects following the consumption of 100 mg broad spectrum CBD. We will continue to share updates on cannabis or cannabinoid policy changes for sports leagues or data on the benefits of cannabinoids as it becomes available. #Recovery #Sportsnutrition #CBDbenefits #Research https://lnkd.in/gqpuKs3J

Cordyceps militaris is an established ingredient in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) due to its wealth of benefits. Cordyceps contains a wealth of beneficial constituents including polysaccharides, nucleotides, amino acids, cordycepic acid, ergosterol, and beta-sitosterol, which all contribute to its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, neuroprotective, antiaging, and immune-supporting properties. Several human studies have been published that demonstrate cordyceps have immune-promoting and supporting effects, however, they lacked data on gender-specific effects. A recent study in Nature Scientific Reports explored the effects of cordyceps delivered in a beverage in a randomized controlled clinical trial on immune response in healthy male and female subjects. The data indicate cordyceps do activate immune-modulating cascades at different time points in male and female participants. Males demonstrated activation of natural killer cells after four weeks and females exhibited significant activation after eight weeks of supplementation with the cordyceps beverage. Males also exhibited an increase in monocyte levels after four and eight weeks of consuming the cordyceps beverage, however the increase was within normal ranges. Male subjects showed an increase in IL-1b at four weeks and female subjects had higher IL-6 levels after eight weeks. Overall, this study supports the immune-modulating benefits of cordyceps in male and female subjects. cbdMD’s sister brand, ATRx Labs, launched the Ultimate Mushroom gummies in recognition of the benefits of functional mushrooms, like cordyceps, lion’s mane, and reishi for a number of areas, including the immune benefits described in the article today. We anticipate future additions to the functional mushroom line in ATRx Labs in recognition of the growing body of literature supporting their benefits. We will continue to share data on the benefits of functional mushrooms and other botanical ingredients as it becomes available. https://lnkd.in/eGfeEjjf #functionalnutrition #functionalmushrooms #innovation #researchanddevelopment

Mental health disorder is a broad term, covering a number of areas including anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and others. These disorders impact cognition, emotion, behavior and impair functioning. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 1 in every 8 people (approximately 970 million) around the world suffer from a mental disorder, with anxiety and depression at the top of the list as most prevalent. WHO also estimated approximately 301 million people were living with an anxiety disorder and was increasing by 26% each year. Many of the current pharmaceutical treatment options have low efficacy rates, cause other symptoms, and potentially lead to adverse events. As the awareness of mental health issues has increased, particularly anxiety, so have the options for treatment, including alternatives to the traditional pharmaceutical recommendations. Cannabidiol (CBD) is a well-studied, nonpsychoactive phytocannabinoids that has demonstrated efficacy for mental disorders, including anxiety. A recent study explored the efficacy of CBD in a double-blind, multicenter, randomized clinical trial for participants with mild to moderate anxiety. Participants in the treatment group received CBD in doses which incrementally increased over the first three weeks of the study from 300 mg/day up to the full quantity of 600 mg/day. The doses were sustained at 600 mg/day until the last week of the study when they were tapered back to 150 mg/day. Subjects in the CBD group demonstrated significant improvements in GAD-7 and HAM-A scores, which are validated tests for anxiety disorder. Subjects in the CBD treatment group also demonstrated significant improvements in all secondary measures which were assessed with clinically validated tests including Clinical Global Impression-Improvement (CGI-I), Clinical Global Impression-Severity (CGI-S), Patient’s Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). cbdMD completed a human double-blind, single-center, randomized clinical study which provided healthy study participants with 100 mg/CBD daily for 90 days. Female participants in the CBD treatment group reported less stress in comparison to the placebo group. Our study provided lower doses of CBD than the study discussed today, which lends itself to the supplement-level endpoints we reported. Together, these studies add to the existing literature supporting the benefits of CBD for anxiety and other issues related to mental health. #CBDWellness #CBDBenefits #Research #Cannabinoids #Cannabidiol https://lnkd.in/erxqjqYR

Osteoarthritis is a well-known condition which significantly impacts synovial joint cartilage and therefore the quality of life in those affected. It is estimated that osteoarthritis of the hand effects approximately 44% of women and 38% of men with symptoms including pain, stiffness, inflammation and loss of strength. Treatment options focus on symptoms and typically include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) as topical medication. If topical options are insufficient, oral NSAIDs are then recommended, however, theuy are known to cause negative gastrointestinal and renal effects. Consumers are seeking botanically-derived options for pain and inflammation that are not pharmaceutical to avoid the side effects associated with this type of treatment. Cannabidiol (CBD) from hemp has been identified as potentially efficacious as an oral or topical analgesic or anti-inflammatory option. Topical formulations with CBD have demonstrated efficacy in several studies, including a study of retired athletes with lower limb pain from injuries and in several preclinical studies. A study published in Nature Research Scientific Reports explored the effects of transdermal CBD in a single-center, interventional, feasibility trial on hand pain, grip strength, and hand functionality. Participants applied the transdermal cream (10 mg CBD) to their most painful hand three times daily for four weeks. Administration of CBD through transdermal application effectively reduced hand pain and grip strength compared to baseline measures. There was also significant improvement in quality of life indices including anxiety, stiffness, and fatigue. CBD delivery was systemic due to the transdermal application, which was confirmed through analysis of urinary concentrations of CBD and several metabolites. The data from this study supports the growing body of literature that intake or administration of CBD helps to reduce pain and provides anti-inflammatory benefits. cbdMD has completed two clinical studies exploring the benefits of our broad spectrum extract on a number of endpoints, including pain. The human clinical provided study participants with 100 mg CBD daily for 90 days, which yielded data supporting our broad spectrum extract’s benefits for daily pain. The canine clinical study administered 5 mg CBD per kg bodyweight to dogs over a 45 day period and found significant reductions in pain severity and pain interference scores in the CBD group. Additionally, canine subjects demonstrated clinically relevant improvements in quality of life and activity scores following CBD consumption. While the route of administration differs, there is a growing body of literature supporting CBD’s benefit on areas which impact quality of life, like pain. We will continue to share data on the benefits of cannabinoids and other functional ingredients as it becomes available. #CBDBenefits #CBDWellness #Research #Cannabinoids https://lnkd.in/enHREW2S

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is recognized in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM V). It typically occurs following a traumatic event (or events) with resultant symptoms including sleep disruption, heightened fear responses, and anxiety among others. As the term PTSD has become more prevalent the options for treatment have also increased with varying degrees of success. Psychotherapy treatments have mixed results in PTSD patients. Pharmacological solutions typically begin with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) but have a lower rate of success than psychotherapy treatments. Pharmaceutical options that are most promising target receptors including N-methyl-D-aspartic acid receptor, 5HT2 receptor, and CB1 receptor. CB1 receptors in the brain are associated with memory extinction, a critical step in the treatment of PTSD.  ∆9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) are well-studied cannabinoids extracted from Cannabis sativa L., which are both known to interact with the CB receptors. A review published in The Journal for Basic Clinical Physiology and Pharmacology analyzed studies exploring the efficacy of cannabinoids for human subjects with PTSD. The results of the review indicate cannabinoids (CBD or THC) are effective at addressing PTSD symptoms including reducing daytime flashbacks, decreasing hyperarousal, increasing sleep quality and general wellbeing. More studies are needed to confirm the results, however, the data covered in this review is encouraging for anyone impacted by PTSD. At cbdMD, we recognize the importance of providing our customers with products that address their needs. Our suite of products provides broad spectrum (no THC) or full spectrum (with THC) options for the areas which matter most, including sleep, mood, and others. We will continue to share data on the benefits of cannabinoids and other functional ingredients as it becomes available. #CBDBenefits #CBDWellness #Research #Cannabinoids https://lnkd.in/e6QjwFkw

Athletes’ desire to achieve peak performance requires significant physical exertion with little time for recovery. The physical demands without sufficient time for recovery lead to increased risk for injury and overall fatigue. Dietary supplements and other ergogenic aids have become staples for athletic populations to push boundaries and recover faster. Recovery products typically include amino acids, antioxidants, and botanically-derived supplements. Cannabidiol (CBD), derived from hemp, has grown in popularity due to its potential benefits including anti-inflammatory, pain and sleep support. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) removed isolated CBD from the prohibited list, further expanding acceptance of products containing CBD for athletes’ recovery programs. A recent systematic review explored studies on CBD for sports recovery using established criterion for determining which studies should be included in the review. Over 2/3 of the data came from preclinical and clinical studies in a multitude of subjects spanning from rodents or porcine animal models to human studies. Overall, results from both animal and human studies reviewed indicate CBD has significant potential for recovery through its anti-inflammatory properties. Results from our human clinical study corroborate the potential benefits for CBD as a component of a recovery program. Healthy human subjects who consumed CBD over 90 days experienced significantly less pain compared to the placebo group via surveys and analysis of biomarkers for pain. We will continue to share more data on the benefits of cannabinoids and other functional ingredients as it becomes available. #CBDBenefits #CBDWellness #SportsRecovery #Research #Cannabinoids https://lnkd.in/evYtYhSt

The number of Americans who are struggling with obesity continues to increase every year. The CDC released new data from 2022 showing 22 states have an adult obesity prevalence at or above 35%, representing an increase over just 10 years ago. Obesity predisposes impacted individuals to a multitude of additional adverse medical conditions. Americans are increasingly focused on how to improve their health and wellness and therefore, are looking to non-pharmaceutical options which include hemp-derived cannabinoid products. The growing body of scientific literature supporting the benefits of hemp-derived cannabinoids includes studies exploring the benefits of tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV). THCV is a naturally occurring phytocannabinoid present in small quantities in Cannabis sativa L. The data indicates it does not contribute to psychoactive effects, rather it appears to support a healthy metabolic profile with positive effects on energy expenditure, body weight, and blood glucose. A recent study explored the benefits of combinations of low levels of cannabidiol (CBD) + THCV in obese adults who were otherwise healthy. Subjects were given one of two doses of the test product (Group A: 10 mg CBD + 8 mg THCV; or Group B: 20 mg CBD + 10 mg THCV) once daily for 90 days. Subjects in both groups experienced significant weight loss and reductions to abdominal girth over time and compared to the placebo group.  Systolic blood pressure improved over time for Group A and total cholesterol numbers improved over time for Group B. LDL values improved for both groups over the study duration. This study supports the benefits of consuming THCV + CBD on metabolic indices over time. cbdMD recently released our THCV+CBG Energy softgels in recognition of the potential benefits from consuming a product containing THCV. We continue to prioritize our customers’ well-being and provide innovative, quality products, like our Energy softgels for their unique needs. We will share more data on THCV as it becomes available. https://lnkd.in/eKQQrSsx #cannabinoids #THCV #botanicals #research #innovation
