  • Happy Sweet 16 to our fabulous American flamingos! We threw an unforgettable birthday bash for our vibrant flock. The festivities included a delightful walk around the Zoo, refreshing sprinklers, an exciting foam party, and engaging animal care and conservation talks for guests. It was a celebration filled with joy, laughter, and lots of pink! Our flamingos bring so much color and life to the Zoo, and we’re thrilled to see them thriving. Here’s to many more years of feathered fun! Join us in wishing our American flamingos a very happy 16th birthday! 🦩💖 #denverzooconservationalliance #flamingos #zoolife #sweet16

  • Our fabulous flamingos love being outside, but the summer sun can be intense! That's why shade is crucial for keeping them cool and comfortable. While our Horticulture team continues integrating trees into new and current habitat designs, some of our habitats require unique shade solutions, like a custom shade sail. These sails aren't just a simple fix—they require concrete caissons, structural steel poles, and professional installation. At $65,000 each, they're a big investment, but they're essential for our animals' well-being. Every little bit helps! Donate today and help us keep our flock fabulous and cool all summer long! 🦩 Donate now: https://lnkd.in/gMv6dn9s

  • Check out this incredible image of a gray wolf photographed on a trail camera set up near East Vail Pass! 🐺 Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance has been collaborating closely with Colorado Parks and Wildlife, Rocky Mountain Wild and Summit County Safe Passages on the Colorado Corridors Project. Now in its ninth year, this project conducts remote camera trapping in East Vail Pass to gather essential data on wildlife movement patterns and assess the location of wildlife crossing structures along I-70. With this wolf photo, the 30 cameras set up in the region have detected 13 species of carnivore in addition to elk, moose, deer and big horn sheep. This collaborative conservation work is vital for securing safe passages for some of the Rocky Mountains’ most iconic species. By working together, we’re making a significant impact on wildlife conservation and supporting coexistence between humans and wildlife in Colorado. Thank you to everyone involved! #SavingWildlifeTogether

  • We’re thrilled to celebrate the 103 volunteers who joined the Colorado Pika Project! They spent their weekends this summer in Independence Pass and Rocky Mountain National Park training with our Colorado Field Conservation team. Our Pika Patrollers have hiked to some of the most breathtaking spots in Colorado, gathering vital data on pika presence and habitat. This information is crucial for land managers and researchers working to understand and mitigate the impacts of climate change on vulnerable alpine ecosystems in Colorado. Want to join the adventure and contribute to the conservation of American pikas? Sign up here: https://lnkd.in/eBiE9Y3 or download the Pika Patrol App and document sightings wherever you find them! Special thanks to Colorado Conservation Coordinator Bruna Silva for capturing our volunteers in action. #ColoradoPikaProject #PikaPatrollers #ClimateAction #CitizenScience #RockyMountainNationalPark #IndependencePass

  • Exciting conservation news from Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance! Last month, our boreal toad conservation team met up with Colorado Parks and Wildlife to release over 2,200 boreal tadpoles and toadlets into a montane lake in South Fork, Colorado! 🏔️🌿🐸 This conservation effort is crucial for protecting these state-listed Endangered amphibians, who face threats from habitat loss, rising temperatures, and chytrid fungus. This year's breeding and release were a huge success, and we're committed to nurturing these populations for years to come. At DZCA, conservation is part of everything we do. This is a wonderful win for endangered wildlife, collaborative conservation efforts and #TeamToad! 🐸 Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gneANXxD #SavingWildlifeTogether

  • Splish, splash, our spotted hyenas love taking baths! Ngozi, Kelele and Tavi always enjoy a cool bubble bath or refreshing dip in the pool when the weather warms up. These fun bubble baths also serve as enrichment, as hyenas like to cache things in water and come back to them later. Our Animal Care staff hides exciting items for the clan to find and ups the challenge level by making the items hard to see with bubbles. Whenever the suds come out, our hyenas get extra excited to play! Treat our hyenas to a sudsy spa day! 🫧 Donate now: https://lnkd.in/eM_S7zF9

  • 🐍 Happy #WorldSnakeDay! At Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance, we proudly care for around 30 species of venomous snakes, with over 100 unique individuals each showcasing their own personalities. Our expert animal care team is specially trained to work with these fascinating reptiles, ensuring the safety of both humans and snakes through various protective measures. Snakes face numerous threats such as habitat loss, climate change, and disease. However, one of the biggest challenges they face is the negative attitudes many people have towards them. Snakes play a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance by controlling prey populations, and their venom has significant medicinal benefits. As Animal Care Specialist Tim says, “Snakes do far more good than harm for humans.” So, even if snakes might seem scary, remember their vital contributions to our environment and medicine. Let’s show them the respect and support they deserve! #SnakeConservation #DenverZooConservationAlliance

  • Meet Opal and Ruby, our newest Endangered Grevy’s zebra girls! Twenty-year-old Opal and Ruby moved to Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance earlier this year to join Topaz and Dusty the ostrich. If you squint a little, it looks like Ruby has a tiny white heart on her chest, Opal sports oblong white spots, and Topaz flaunts a sleek black stripe. Ruby is our brave leader, already taking treats from her amazing Animal Care team, but sometimes she waits for Topaz to show it's safe. These girls are settling in well and are lovely additions to our herd! 🖤 🤍 Have you seen our latest zebra-inspired collab shirt with BE A GOOD PERSON? This special collab spreads positivity through fashion to inspire, uplift and motivate our community with a universal message of goodness. • Here’s a fin-tastic care story from Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance in honor of Shark Week and Shark Awareness Day! 🦈 Moon is an epaulette shark at Stingray Cove™ who was observed by his Animal Care Specialists occasionally biting his tail. Since this behavior in sharks could indicate pain or an injury, he was evaluated by our Veterinary Medicine team. They performed a CT scan and ultrasound to evaluate his spine and internal structures for any cause of the behavior. Luckily for Moon, no obvious lesions were found, and he has responded swimmingly to a short course of treatment with pain medications. It's been over two months since Moon's dedicated care team has observed the tail biting behavior and they report he's doing well in his Stingray Cove home! All our clinical veterinarians are Board Certified Specialists in Zoological Medicine™, with expertise in zoo, wildlife, and aquatic animals. Additionally, our Senior Director of Animal Health, Dr. Jimmy Johnson, has a special interest in aquatic species, particularly sharks, and is also a Certified Aquatic Veterinarian! Whether it’s an epaulette shark or an Asian elephant, our amazing veterinarians and registered veterinary technicians are available 24/7 to provide expert care to every animal that calls DZCA home! 🦈 Photo Credit: Programs Specialist Rachel O. and Dr. Jimmy Johnson #DenverZooConservationAlliance #SavingWildlifeTogether #SharkWeek #SharkAwarenessDay
