Ever wondered what an average workday looks like for an 📜 Archival Digitization Assistant? Wonder no more! For the last few months, Jane Grimmer has been digitizing History Colorado’s manuscript collections of Margaret Brown and her son, Lawrence. Each box contains dozens of personal papers, newspaper articles, and photographs that she must read, scan, and catalog for our Online Collection. Working on this project, Jane has gotten to know the Brown family on such a deeper level, and she is excited that her work will make these materials accessible to even more people. Interested in getting to know the Browns like Jane has? Consider becoming a digital transcription volunteer! You can help us make the Margaret Brown letters and numerous other collections even more accessible for the people of Colorado. "Every page 📖📒 has a new story to tell." -Cassidy Nemick, Collections Specialist "I am responsible for processing and digitizing the massive Fred M. Mazzulla Collection. The collection itself is over 250 linear feet in size, and features at least 250,000 images of the American West. My day to day looks different depending on what part of the collection I am working on. But more or less I do a lot of digitizing of documents and images. My team and I research each image and record all the information we can about it before putting it online in our database. I also spend a lot of my time going through the manuscript portion of this collection, accessing and choosing items to digitize. Due to the sheer size of this collection I unfortunately can’t scan everything, but I make sure that what I do scan is interesting in one way or another. This collection is one big adventure in archives. We have a general idea of what is in each folder, but more often than not we are surprised by the contents. We find cool things each day including postcards from Louis Armstrong, a signed photo of Wild Bill Hickock, and other Western treasures. My favorite part of this collection has been working with the items related to crime and vice in early Colorado. From scrapbooks of Colorado madams to the Denver Police Department crime books. Every page has a new story to tell." - Image 3: Mazzulla Collection, History Colorado 2022.57.1681 #coloradohistory #history #colorado

Did You Know? Our new collection from Rocky Flats (2024.44), the Colorado plant that produced plutonium triggers during the Cold War, includes gifts from Soviet scientific exchanges, equipment (like this scintillator), peace protest items like this American flag vest worn by Alex Mayer, and glovebox gloves, which will be used in education programs. All of these items were collected by the former Rocky Flats Cold War Museum, then donated to us by their Board. Collectively, they tell the complex story of what it was like to work in, and protest against, the U.S. nuclear industry. - #coloradohistory #colorado

#DYK? Up until 1974, many women needed to have a male co-signer to open a bank account or acquire a line of credit. That was, until, eight women, Carol Green, Judi Wagner, LaRae Orullian, Gail Schoettler, Wendy Davis, Joy Burns, Beverly Martinez, and Edna Mosely, came together to change that by opening their own U.S. Women's Bank! Today, the topic of women's financial empowerment is being continuously fought for by organizations like The Pledgettes, a financial community that emboldens women to align their money to their values to create more powerful financial lives. The Pledgettes believe that when more women take individual action or make money moves, our collective impact grows, leading to healthier, wealthier communities. Join The Pledgettes at the Center for Colorado Women’s History on June 20th, 4:00 PM for a workshop all about intentional banking through the lens of gender. Facilitated by The Pledgettes’ founder Jenn Uhen, participants will learn more about the history of the gender wealth gap, community banking, and the impact that can be had when women make informed financial choices. Participants will be invited to learn from one another and share in one-on-one and small group discussions about their own money experiences using prompts such as ‘What is your first money memory?’. In discussion with one another and Jenn, visitors will gain confidence in financial literacy and free and low-cost action steps to take towards empowered banking 💸 -- #coloradohistory #denverhistory #womenshistory #denvercolorado
