Our long-time partners at Fast Forward have been cataloging the ways AI is enabling nonprofit organizations to reach their goals -- and that research is now live in Stanford Social Innovation Review. Glad to co-author this first piece with Kevin Barenblat and look forward to the rest of the series that will dive deeper into some of the specific use cases in key areas. We're hopeful that these can continue to paint a picture of what's already happening and what might be possible as AI technology evolves.
How are nonprofits using AI for impact? A new in-depth series sponsored by Fast Forward kicks off with an analysis of 100 use cases from Kevin Barenblat of Fast Forward and Brigitte Hoyer Gosselink of Google (Google.org). Understanding how nonprofits are leveraging AI will help other social entrepreneurs and funders see—and get inspired by—the vast possibilities in applying AI for social good. “Technological advancement has historically overlooked the needs of the most vulnerable. Nonprofits and civil society belong at the forefront of AI. By bolstering communities’ agency to decide when and how to use it, the transformation can happen with them, not to them.” Learn more about what’s happening in the emerging AI-powered nonprofit space: https://lnkd.in/ebHVuhDy Sign up for notifications about new articles in the series: https://lnkd.in/eabY76Tz #nonprofits #artificialintelligence #socialentrepreneurs

What's an AI powered nonprofit? These newer organizations, who use a technology product to further programs, are worth getting to know. Every tech nonprofit leader I worked with through Full Circle Fund's now retired tech growth accelerator is creative, ambitious and strategic, and the ways they are using technology can inspire future program and strategic partnerships. Fast Forward, is a leading voice in supporting this community and raising awareness, so this series starting with this piece by Kevin Barenblat is very welcome. Check it out!

How are nonprofits harnessing the power of A.I. to tackle some of the world's most complex problems? A new report from Fast Forward, a tech nonprofit accelerator, highlights four key roles, ranging from advising to creating platforms. This look at the rapidly evolving landscape of AI in nonprofit settings covers everything from chatbots that can help students with their homework to machine learning tools that can help monitor deforestation. If you're building, using or thinking about A.I.'s role for nonprofits -- especially as it relates to thorny ethical questions and the importance of ensuring that use of the technology aligns with organizations' missions and values -- share your thoughts in the comments section below. The landscape for using AI for social good is ever evolving in the nonprofit world, as illustrated by the Stanford Social Innovation Review’s article today, and we’re proud to be a part of it. This new landscape map created by Fast Forward’s Kevin Barenblat and Brigitte Hoyer Gosselink from Google.org focuses on AI advancing impact objectives of nonprofits, and breaks it into three main categories: Advising, Structuring Data, and Translating. Learning Equality, our equity-driven edtech nonprofit, has been using AI to structure data (more specifically to organize digital learning resources via automating the process of curriculum alignment) to ensure that relevant information is easily accessible for learners and educators on Kolibri– our open, free and adaptable ecosystem of products and tools especially designed for teaching and learning with tech but without the Internet. For example, we recently automated the organization of 12,000 learning resources to 2,000+ distinct learning objectives in STEM, for 10 different grade levels in Uganda. This reduced a process that previously took months of work and cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, to a matter of days and a few thousand dollars, thanks to equity-driven AI. We’re eager to get these AI data organization tools directly into the hands of ALL disconnected communities and continue to discover new ways that AI can help build equity in education. https://lnkd.in/g5UZBHU9 #AIforGood #AIForHumanity #AI #ArtificialIntelligence #CurriculumAlignment #EdTech #DigitalEducationResources #EducationEquity

CareerVillage and Coach feature in this thoughtful article by Sara Herschander in The Chronicle of Philanthropy on the use of AI in the nonprofit sector: "Yet for A.I. advocates like Jared Chung, the investments and care required to constantly debug and monitor for biases of A.I. systems are worth the possibilities they present. He argues that while it’s important to be thoughtful and cautious about the use of A.I., ultimately the decision should be driven by the needs and preferences of the people nonprofits serve. In CareerVillage’s case, the positive feedback from students and the impact that Coach is having on their career prospects makes the investment in A.I. worthwhile, he says." Awesome nonprofits also mentioned: Fast Forward, Koko, Playlab AI ❤️
