DYK: 82 percent of eligible individuals are choosing not to undergo potentially life-saving lung cancer screening, according to a new study released by the American Cancer Society (ACS). Lung cancer is the country's leading cause of cancer-related deaths, with most cases not caught until a late stage when the survival rate is only 8%. When identified early, lung cancer is treatable. Today, our new Emergency Medicine Residents partnered with the Myrtle Beach Fire Department's Ocean Rescue Team to learn how to respond to various emergencies in and around the ocean. This provided residents with a hands-on experience to gain a better understanding of what takes place before a patient arrives to the emergency room. The training focused on beach medicine, water rescue techniques, and EMS and fire rescue procedures. Thank you to the Myrtle Beach Fire Department for helping expand the knowledge of our residents and for improving the lives of others! Last week, our nurse managers gathered together for a Nurse Retreat to share best practices and encourage each other in their leadership roles. At the meeting, they also stuffed 120 backpacks with school supplies and cheerful notes to donate to Help4Kids, a local nonprofit organization who provides clothing, food and school supplies to families in need.
