For Disability Pride Month, Caitlyn Valadez, CSM, CISD, MPA, senior consultant, product development, shared a personal story of how she utilizes accessibility software and works to make the workplace more inclusive. She also recognized her colleague, Katherine "Katie" Thompson, senior analyst, data analysis, who introduced her to “color vision deficiency” and its importance to maintaining accessibility. We’re proud of the innovative work LMIers like Caitlyn Valadez and Katie Thompson do to help build an inclusive culture. // #PeoplePoweringPossible #DisabilityPrideMonth #LifeatLMI #DiversityEquityInclusion //
My colleague, Katherine "Katie" Thompson, and I were set to co-facilitate a data visualization training for federal government interns this summer. When she reviewed the content for the first time, she graciously mentioned a gap in the content regarding accessibility and introduced me to using the term "color vision deficiency" (commonly referred to as colorblindness). After taking medical leave, I was determined to harness the challenges of my own chronic health issues and turn them into something that might one day make it easier for someone else. I started by sharing my story with family, friends, and colleagues, aiming to normalize accommodations and make the workplace more inclusive. So as you can imagine, as someone who uses read-aloud/voice-to-text software, I was pretty upset that I had missed this gap in the course content. This was the first of many trainings we are set to deliver this summer, and now each one includes crucial accessibility aspects. In honor of July being Disability Pride Month, I will share the accessibility tips and tricks I've learned along the way in the development of this training series. Additionally, I’ll share my own story and the things I've implemented in my workday and workspace to make the workplace more inclusive for how my brain and body operate. I hope this one example of vulnerability gives you the confidence to have conversations like this with your colleagues as well! If more like this happen we can truly make the workplace a more inclusive space. #DisabilityPrideMonth #Accessibility #ChronicIllness #InstructionalDesign #HumanCenteredDesign #MyLMI #LifeatLMI

As we begin a new fiscal year, VCIC is thrilled and grateful to welcome the following individuals as new members of our Peninsula Chapter: Ellen Rice Chever (LMI) and Eric Maurer (United Jewish Community of the Virginia Peninsula). Local chapter members are the “eyes and ears” of the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities, identifying program opportunities, supporting the Peninsula Humanitarian Awards, and making sure that VCIC is well-connected in the communities we serve.
