At the recent Channel Meet Up in Boston, our sponsors Mindmatrix hosted a round table discussion all about 'ecosystems'. The aim of the discussions was to see how vendors can evolve partner channels and marketing programs in the ecosystem environment. Channel, it seems, has always been viewed as a linear process, but an ecosystem is dynamic; an ever-changing environment where partners can exert influence and drive change. This means things are no longer defined by the type of partner as they play different roles within the ecosystem. Types no longer define the partner. A referral partner today could evolve into a services and delivery partner tomorrow. Or even a co-sell partner. So if you're bucketing your partners, you might be inadvertently shutting them out of conversations that could be beneficial to them. And that's a missed opportunity. Vendors need to rethink the approach and embrace the fluidity of the ecosystem and the potential it holds for everyone as within an ecosystem, everyone has a part to play.
