To improve care for people living with #HIV, Ukraine aims to deliver a guaranteed package of services at the primary health care level. But are PHC facilities in Ukraine prepared to offer person-centered, integrated HIV services? And if not, what do they need to get there? 🚗 We traveled the country to find out. The PATH-led, USAID-funded Re-envisioning Excellence and Accessibility in Clinic-based HIV Services (REACH 95) Activity is working with the government of Ukraine to increase equitable access to high-quality HIV care. To kick off the project, our team visited 62 health care facilities in 16 regions to conduct in-person and virtual baseline assessments on the current landscape of HIV service delivery, as well as gaps and needs. REACH 95’s goal is in its name: ensuring that 95% of people living with HIV know their HIV status, 95% of people who know their status are receiving HIV treatment, and 95% of people on treatment are virally suppressed by 2030. In Ukraine, reaching these targets is possible. Recently, I had the privilege of spending time in Seattle with my fellow board members of PATH, a global non-profit organization that I’ve been involved with for many years. PATH’s mission is to improve health equity, breaking down barriers to critical healthcare so that people everywhere, regardless of their circumstances, have the opportunity to live healthy lives. Earlier this month, PATH made news for its key contributions to the development of the world's first malaria vaccine, RTS,S. This vaccine is the culmination of over two decades of dedicated research and testing, and is a major milestone in efforts to make vaccines broadly accessible. For PATH to reach these critical milestones, it partners with a number of organizations whose work complements their mission. We had the opportunity to get a close-up look at the work with one such partner, Inventprise. Inventprise is making incredible strides in advancing vaccine technology and research, and with collaborators like PATH, are helping deliver more vaccines globally. It was inspiring to see their efforts firsthand through a tour of their manufacturing site right here in Woodinville, WA. PATH was also a key partner to Amazon during the COVID-19 pandemic in helping us support workers across our supply chain in Southeast Asia with awareness and preparedness training. So, it was extra special that the board was also able to convene at the Spheres, right on our Seattle campus! You can read more about PATH’s recent work below. https://lnkd.in/gJEPZEkM

A bright spot: more girls are being protected against cervical cancer than ever before, thanks in part to 37 countries adopting a single-dose HPV vaccination schedule in 2023. #VaccinesWork
A new report from the World Health Organization and UNICEF highlights vaccination trends against 13 diseases across 195 countries. "This year’s data reveal a complex picture on the state of global immunisation, with global coverage remaining steady, yet Gavi implementing countries vaccinating a near record number of children to accommodate a growing birth cohort,” said Sania Nishtar, CEO of Gavi. India has the third–highest global burden of sickle cell disease (SCD). PATH is working closely with the state government in Maharashtra to enhance screening, diagnosis, and care for SCD. Supporting the National Sickle Cell Anemia Elimination Mission (NSCAEM), PATH provides technical assistance to the state to decentralize SCD management by integrating it into primary health care. Our efforts include training health care staff, collaborating with local organizations to raise awareness and reduce stigma, and ensuring the availability of essential medications and diagnostics through strengthened supply chains. PATH’s Mayank Sharma and Sushil Patil share how these efforts are transforming lives and moving us closer to a SCD-free India: https://bit.ly/3xTjkcj Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India | National Health Systems Resource Centre | USAID | Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation | Maj Gen (Prof) Atul Kotwal, SM, VSM | Dr. Swati Mahajan | Neeraj Jain

On June 20, PATH commemorated 20 years of advancing health equity in #Zambia. With the leadership of the Zambian government through the Ministry of Health of Zambia, generous support from development partners, and collaboration with local and international implementing partners, we've made significant strides in improving health care access and quality for Zambians nationwide. Over the past two decades, PATH has partnered with the Ministry of Health across a spectrum of critical health areas. Our collaborative efforts have spanned: 🦟 Malaria control 💉 Immunizations 📱 Digital health innovations 🤰 Maternal, newborn, and child health and nutrition ♀️ Sexual and reproductive health 🏥 And the fight against noncommunicable diseases. This comprehensive approach has allowed us to address Zambia’s health challenges holistically. And our shared impact has been remarkable. In Southern Province, we’ve demonstrated that #MalariaElimination is achievable, with an 87% reduction in cases and a 97% reduction in facility-reported malaria deaths. Through collaboration, we’ve trained and mentored over 24,000 community health workers, bringing health care to people’s doorsteps. We’ve strengthened surveillance systems, enhanced laboratory capacities, and improved access to high-quality data, empowering decision-makers with crucial insights. The event's Guest of Honor was Dr. George Sinyangwe, Permanent Secretary, Donor Coordination at the Zambia Ministry of Health, who praised PATH as a “trusted partner in driving innovation and improving health outcomes.” Philip Welkhoff, Director of Malaria at the Gates Foundation, emphasized the “long-standing partnership that has revolutionized malaria control efforts,” while Dr. Paul Psychas, the Resident Advisor at the U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative, commended PATH’s “collaborative approach in strengthening health systems.” This journey has been made possible through the invaluable support of our development partners, including USAID, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the U.S. President's Malaria Initiative (PMI), the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, and the Bayer Foundation. As outlined in the PATH Zambia Strategy launched at this event, our mission remains clear: Advancing health equity through innovation and partnership. We believe better health propels humanity forward, enabling individuals, communities, and nations to thrive. We will continue our efforts until Zambia is free of malaria, health systems are digitized, and all people enjoy good health. Thank you to our partners, donors, and the Zambian people for two decades of impactful collaboration. Here’s to many more years of advancing #HealthEquity together! Hon. Sylvia T. In collaboration with the Government of Sri Lanka Presidential Secretariat Support Unit and Connect to Care, PATH organized a workshop on staple food fortification in #SriLanka. The workshop brought together stakeholders from government bodies, international organizations, the private sector, and civil society to develop a coordinated approach to address malnutrition through food fortification, with a focus on the National School Meal Programme. At the occasion, the government announced that Sri Lanka has now gained the capacity to produce fortified rice kernels (FRK), with support from PATH, World Food Programme, Akshata, and Connect to Care. Through this crucial collaboration, we aim to improve the health and nutritional well-being of schoolchildren across the country. PATH has been highlighted in Stephanie Nolen's article for The New York Times, which outlines the challenging development process of the world’s first malaria vaccine, RTS,S. This groundbreaking vaccine is the culmination of over two decades of dedicated research, rigorous testing, and partnership with organizations like GSK, the World Health Organization, Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. We remain unwavering in our commitment to saving lives through the RTS,S malaria vaccine. In pilot implementations across Ghana, Kenya, and Malawi, we've documented a 13% reduction in all-cause mortality among vaccinated children, alongside a significant decrease in severe malaria hospitalizations. As of last November, Cameroon has taken a pivotal step as the first non-pilot country to receive the vaccine, marking a significant advancement towards broader accessibility. https://lnkd.in/dZQ2tcNB #EndMalaria #ImmunizationEquity #HealthForAll
