EU-US Safe Harbor Rules Invalidated by EU High Court

In a move welcomed by the EU's Data Protection Commissioner, the EU's Court of Justice ruled the EU-US Safe Harbor agreement invalid. For the time being, data will be allowed to continue flowing, but it is expected that new guidelines will be put into place that restrict the transfer of EU citizens' data to data centers in the US. It seems that the EU is getting a bit weary of US companies playing Russian Roulette with their citizens' data in such an appallingly cavalier fashion. Several officials within the EU expressed the opinion that in order to maintain EU citizens' data, US companies will be forced to build data centers in Europe to handle data.

The larger issue here is that the US still has not made any progress towards federated privacy and most state level laws focus on breach.

This is under reported and a far more important ruling than at first glance. Companies need to take immediate notice.

Hey now. This is significant and I applaud them for wanting more teeth in the directive.
