Strengthening knowledge and understanding of dietary supplements.
About us
The Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), is the lead federal government entity addressing the scientific exploration of dietary supplements. ODS is located in the NIH Office of the Director in the Division of Program Coordination, Planning, and Strategic Initiatives in Bethesda, MD. ODS was established by Congress as part of the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 (Public Law 103-417, DSHEA). Its mission is to strengthen knowledge and understanding of dietary supplements by evaluating scientific information, stimulating and supporting research, disseminating research results, and educating the public to foster an enhanced quality of life and health for the U.S. population. ODS scientific staff have international reputations for their work in the fields of analytical chemistry, pharmacognosy, biochemistry, epidemiology, clinical nutrition, dietetics, and health communications, allowing ODS to address the complex and sometimes challenging issues pertaining to dietary supplements. Which probiotic is best for you? Right now, we don’t know. Even though research has shown that individuals may respond differently to the same probiotic, we don’t fully understand the reasons why. But in the future, it may be possible to identify the people most likely to benefit from specific probiotics and use that knowledge to develop tailored treatments. In a new blog post, Dr. Hye-Sook Kim of our Division of Extramural Research discusses two funding opportunities from The National Institutes of Health (NIH) for research to advance scientific understanding in this area. https://go.nih.gov/ZaMhXFV #Probiotics #PrecisionMedicine #PersonalizedMedicine #ResearchFunding #HealthResearch

The breadth and complexity of nutrition science demands that we ask ourselves and one another to engage and leverage intentional and nontraditional connections. In my July Drew’s Views blog, I talk about how it is “Through these touchpoints, we surface new research questions.” In “Small Office; Big Footprint” from the National Institutes of Health, Office of Nutrition Research, I talk about how my office works to create and sustain key connections across NIH, the federal government, and beyond, to enable new research because…#Nutrition is everyone’s business! Can taking riboflavin reduce migraine headaches? Mitochondrial dysfunction is thought to play a causal role in some types of migraine. Because riboflavin is required for mitochondrial function, researchers are studying whether taking riboflavin can prevent or treat migraine headaches. A few small studies have found evidence of a beneficial effect of riboflavin supplements on migraine headaches in adults and children, but other studies have not. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/e-pjcRGY

High intakes of vitamin B6 from food hasn’t been reported to cause adverse effects. However, taking very high amounts of vitamin B6 from supplements for a year or more can cause severe and progressive sensory neuropathy characterized by ataxia (poor muscle control that can affect balance). Symptom severity depends on the dose, and symptoms usually stop if the high dose supplementation is stopped when the neurological symptoms appear. For this reason, vitamin B6 has an upper limit of 100 mg per day for adults. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/esfbr8is
