In the seven years since Unity Health Toronto became a network, we have worked to drive system transformation and improve patient care by harnessing the collective power of our individual sites to create the best care experiences, together. Unity Health’s 2023-24 Annual Report highlights the ways we have leveraged the connection of our communities to be leaders in our areas of world class specialty care, artificial intelligence and health equity. Because of these communities, we have accomplished many things: having our trauma program verified as a Level 1 Trauma Centre by the American College of Surgeons, preparing for our new Electronic Patient Record, and taking meaningful steps to promote equity and to make sure everyone who works at and enters our sites feels welcomed, respected and included. This report features the hard work and dedication of so many staff, physicians, learners, volunteers and patient family partners, and tells the stories of the incredible patients and families who have sought care at our sites. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to Unity Health’s achievements this year. None of it would be possible without you. Read the Annual Report: https://lnkd.in/dMM23Dfr

St. Michael's Hospital and the South East Toronto Stroke Network recently visited Thorncliffe Park Public School to teach young students to recognize the signs of stroke. The hope is that the students will pass on these life-saving lessons to their parents, grandparents and loved ones. See more photos and read about the day: https://lnkd.in/gVCqDMUp St. Michael’s Neurologist Dr. Manav Vyas was excited to join the team in Thorncliffe and engage with the kids. In addition to his work as a physician, he is an accomplished researcher who investigates stroke risk among immigrants in Canada. “My research has shown that many immigrants bargain their health for economic stability after moving to Canada. In doing so, they don’t seek primary care and accumulate risk factors that can lead to stroke,” Vyas said. “Coming into communities like Thorncliffe is important. There are many immigrants here and many may not know how our healthcare system works or where to go if they’re having a stroke. By targeting their children, who attend school regularly, the kids can be the ones who bring this info home and teach their parents.” #Stroke #StrokeTreatment
A team at St. Michael’s Hospital and in rehabilitation at Providence Healthcare worked together to support patients with myositis to receive treatment and rehabilitation to manage their symptoms:
Myositis is a disease that makes your immune system attack your muscles. The skin, joints, lungs and heart could also be affected. It causes muscle inflammation that leads to progressive weakness and functional limitations. While there is no cure, there are effective treatments to control the condition together with physical rehabilitation. Through a first-of-its-kind rehab pathway in Ontario, a team of clinicians in rheumatology and neurology at St. Michael's Hospital and in rehabilitation at Providence Healthcare worked together to support patients with myositis to receive treatment and rehabilitation to manage their symptoms. The team held an inaugural symposium at Providence with the goal of building the knowledge base and educating Unity Health Toronto and community providers on the assessment and care of patients with myositis.
