Position Summary

The Director of Planned Giving is a proven relationship builder, an effective communicator, and a performance-oriented professional. Planned giving is a complex and broad area including management of estate, will and bequest intentions, retirement plans, real estate, life insurance, charitable trusts, and other gift vehicles. Under the direction and guidance of the Vice President for Institutional Advancement, the Director will be tasked with setting goals and implementing strategies and policies for planned giving for University Advancement. The Director will maintain strong relationships with existing donors through annual stewardship visits and assist in traditional fundraising activities. The Director should possess a comprehensive track record of fundraising accomplishments, constituent relations, and the demonstrated capacity of being able to work within a team environment.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain a portfolio of 75-100 planned giving prospects (who typically have capacity of $50,000+).
  • Serve as a resource for development officers by assisting with planned giving discussions and donor presentations, as well as developing strategies for blended gifts to leverage gift potential
  • Ability to travel regionally and work some evening and weekend hours.
  • Demonstrated success in one-on-one communications and relationship-building with donors and prospects.
  • Creatively manage development activities and identify fundraising opportunities in an entrepreneurial, innovative and forward-thinking manner.
  • Commitment to continuing education in the field of gift planning.
  • This position demands accuracy, honesty, integrity and the ability to work within the Christian mission of Campbell University.

  • Other duties, responsibilities and activities may change or be assigned at any time with or without notice, including a needed focus on other university fundraising priorities such as the Fund for Campbell, capital project needs, and other development priorities.

Education/Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Graduate degree preferred
  • At least five years of significant higher education, nonprofit, or related experiences in the area of fundraising, donor stewardship, and prospect cultivation
  • Demonstrated track record of soliciting, closing, and stewarding donor gifts, including leadership gifts of at least $10,000

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written) in relating to university administrators, academic leaders, university advancement staff, alumni, and other external audiences
  • Maintain strict confidentiality and attention to detail are essential
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint and the Internet
  • Demonstrate tact, a positive attitude, courtesy and discretion in dealing with trustees, faculty, staff, students, high-level university officials, alumni and external partners
  • Work independently as well as function effectively in a team and within a diverse group of people
  • Exercise independent judgment in complex and new situations
  • Proven ability to lead, manage and organize multiple projects with energy, clarity, optimism, diplomacy and integrity
  • Detail-oriented and willing to work in a changing environment
  • Have a broad knowledge of Campbell University policies and procedures, including but not limited to Title IX, HIPAA and FERPA guidelines
