Every time you eat is an opportunity to improve your health. But here in the UK, over 50% of our energy intake comes from ultra-processed foods and more than 90% of us are deficient in fibre. Research shows that our food choices are the most powerful factor in reducing our risk of disease — more than smoking, exercise or alcohol intake. (PMID: 30954305) Eating more plants, fibre and wholefoods is key for better health, but our busy lives can make this challenging. That’s why we created Daily 30+, a first of it’s kind wholefood supplement with 5g of fibre from over 30 different plants in every scoop. Unlike most supplements, we tested Daily30+ in a randomised controlled trial (RCT) and the results speak for themselves — improvements in sleep quality, energy, gut microbiome composition and reduced hunger. Head to https://lnkd.in/eFQQKa-N to add a scoop of ZOE science to your plate.

According to the NHS, 50% of people will get cancer in their lifetime. While this is a startling statistic, advancements in cancer research have increased survival rates in recent years. As research progresses, we remain hopeful that survival rates will keep improving. We are thrilled to announce that Team PROSPECT, including ZOE Scientists Professor Tim Spector and Dr Sarah Berry, has been awarded a £20M grant from Cancer Grand Challenges, partly funded by Dame Deborah James’ Bowelbabe Fund for Cancer Research UK. With this funding, Team PROSPECT will investigate the increasing rates of early-onset cancers in adults and develop new methods to assess risk and prevent colorectal cancer. To honour the second anniversary of Dame Deborah James’ passing, Dr Sarah Berry will be on BBC's The One Show to share more about how her legacy is funding research to hopefully turn the tides on early-onset colorectal cancer. Tune in to The One Show on BBC One tomorrow at 7pm BST to learn more.

Who doesn't love a good documentary? Professor Tim Spector, ZOE's scientific co-founder, is a part of the newest Netflix doc, Hack your Health: The Secrets of your Gut. It follows four test subjects as they discover what their food choices can tell them about their health. In order to gain insight into their gut microbiomes, they participate in a study that examines their gut bacteria; ZOE supplied the testing kits (try to spot our old pink branding in the doc). Tim is joined by other microbiome science heavyweights, including previous ZOE podcast guest Professor John Cryan, to demystify the role gut health plays in our overall well-being Remember: eating 30 different plants a week may boost the diversity of your gut microbiome. ZOE: Scientifically proven to help improve health. Two and a half years ago, we began a randomised controlled trial to put ZOE to the test. We registered the study with the clinical trials registry, meaning whatever the results, we had to publish them. This is a standard of scientific rigour rarely seen in nutrition or wellness but as a science-first company, we decided to put ZOE to the test. Our results confirmed what thousands of members already know, ZOE works. As published in the world’s leading peer-reviewed journal, Nature Medicine (or as @drsarahberry puts it ‘the Oscars of science!’), those doing ZOE saw larger reductions in blood fat, body weight, and waist circumference compared to a control group following generalised dietary advice. They had better blood sugar control, and increased their ‘good’ gut bacteria. Crucially, those doing ZOE felt better. They were twice as likely to report improved mood and less hunger and four times more likely to report better sleep and more energy than the control group. The more closely participants followed ZOE advice, the better they felt and the more they improved their weight and cholesterol, associated with a lower risk for heart disease and diabetes. At ZOE, we’ve always believed that you can transform your health by making the smartest food choices for you. And we’re so thrilled to share the science that proves it. In our mission to improve the health of millions, today we've taken a significant step towards making our science more accessible, or should we say, more drinkable? When Marks and Spencer approached us to create a first-of-it’s-kind gut shot, we were so excited to lend our expertise and bottle up decades of nutrition research to inspire the nation to kickstart their gut health journey. Our kefir based shot contains, 5 billion live cultures from 14 different strains of bacteria and a variety of plants, like berries, baobab and pomegranate. It gives you an easy way to increase your daily intake of fibre and support your gut health. But that’s not all, along with the gut shot, we’ve created a free gut health guide to get the nation started on their journey to better health including recipes, shopping lists, tips from our scientists and helpful swaps to support your gut health. To download the guide and find out more about the partnership, visit zoe.com/gutshot

Well, this was a big year… Our mission at ZOE is to improve the health of millions and in 2023, we took huge leaps towards achieving it. We grew our headcount from 205 to over 425 and doubled our number of active ZOE members from 50,000 to over 100,000. Our growing team worked hard to improve the ZOE experience including the introduction of AI to make food logging easier and the launch of highly requested gut health retesting. After 800,000 ZOE muffins we said goodbye and introduced our test cookies which not only taste better but are vegan too, making personalised nutrition available for even more people. We shared more about the science that drives us, publishing 16 pieces of groundbreaking research, including our discovery of 100 new gut bacteria and our first ever randomised controlled trial, METHOD to prove that ZOE works. Our podcast, ZOE Science & Nutrition, hit the number one spot in the UK, amassed over 15 million downloads and became the most widely shared show on Apple Podcasts in 2023. The best part is that this only the beginning. We can’t wait to see what’s coming for ZOE in 2024, thanks for being on this journey with us and happy new year! 💛
