A new option for calcium sulfonate greases: providing greater manufacturing flexibility With heightened lithium demand and price volatility, many grease producers are diversifying their technology portfolio to include calcium sulfonate greases. Calcium sulfonate has long been considered the performance champion with its high shock load protection, good structural strength, seal protection, and water washout resistance. In response, Afton Chemical created a patented process that enables manufacturers to make a high-performing complex grease from its 300TBN calcium sulfonate. However, the promoter used in this patented grease process, isopropyl alcohol, has multiple safety classifications. Considering the difficulties in handling, Afton worked to identify a replacement promoter with a higher flashpoint and lower safety restrictions, recognizing that any substitute would not increase the formulation costs nor detract from the finished grease’s performance. This improved patented process speeds up calcium sulfonate grease production. In addition to requiring less thickener, it now utilizes a promoter with improved health and safety handling. Down to the wire: ETF compatibility In the pursuit of e-motor efficiency, OEMs are striving to increase power output while reducing size. A key factor influencing e-motor size is the magnet wire used in stator windings. The compatibility of Electrified Transmission Fluid (ETF) with the magnet wire and other materials it contacts is crucial. Despite no current issues, future compatibility cannot be assumed due to increasingly harsh e-motor operating conditions and a widening range of insulating materials.   Afton Chemical has developed a robust in-house screening test for ETF and magnet wire compatibility. This test incorporates ETF field performance data from multiple HEVs and EVs. This predictive screening test can significantly improve the speed and success of ETF development, considering the growing range of magnet wires and fluid additive components in use.
