We're in business to save our home planet.

About us

Founded by Yvon Chouinard in 1973, Patagonia is an outdoor apparel company based in Ventura, California. A certified B-Corporation, Patagonia’s mission is to save our home planet. The company is recognized internationally for its commitment to authentic product quality and environmental activism, donating 1% of sales annually, contributing over $100 million in grants and in-kind donations since 1985. We’re always looking for motivated people to join us in our retail stores; at our Ventura, California headquarters; Reno, Nevada Service Center; and occasionally in our overseas offices. We’re especially interested if you love spending as much time as possible in the mountains or the wild, feel more at home in a base camp or on the river than an office, and have a passion for something outside of yourself, whether for surfing or opera, climbing or gardening, skiing or community activism. Learn more about who we are and how we hire by visiting our Careers website at http://www.patagonia.com/us/careers.

“We simplified the mission statement from ‘Build the best product, cause no unnecessary harm, use business to inspire and implement solutions to the environmental crisis’… to ‘We're in business to save our home planet.’ I was skeptical at first. I thought, this is highly aspirational language. Yes, that's a value of the company, but how central is that to us?”    Listen to Patagonia director of philosophy Vincent Stanley’s interview with Inc. about growing a business responsibly. https://lnkd.in/gUh_RB8G

In observance of Juneteenth, all of Patagonia’s U.S.-based stores will be closed Wednesday, June 19, 2024. We extend our gratitude to retired teacher Opal Lee, whose activism helped to nationally commemorate the emancipation of the last enslaved Africans and African Americans in the United States. Opal Lee was 89 years old when she began her walk to make Juneteenth a federal holiday, proving that you’re never too old to be an activist. In 2016 she walked over 1,400 miles from Fort Worth, Texas, to Washington, D.C., at a pace of 2.5 miles a day to represent the 2.5 years that Black Texans remained enslaved after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Now 97, Lee is most gratified to see children’s eagerness to learn about the roots of the holiday. “It’s not a Texas thing and it’s not a Black thing. It’s freedom for all of us,” she says. “If people can be taught to hate, they can be taught to love.” Read more about Opal Lee’s activism and the significance of Juneteenth at https://lnkd.in/dvZxnhcs

“The Planet Needs Our Vote!” That’s why we are giving all European Patagonia employees the time they need to cast their vote in European Parliament elections this summer. And today, we join forces with Oatly to send this message to businesses across Europe.   Read the open letter from Nina Hajikhanian and Jean-Christophe Flatin and join the movement now.

Helping more people to get out and vote has been part of Patagonia’s history for many years. Time to Vote, a non-partisan movement of over 2,000 member companies in North America is one example of this work. Now, with EU Parliament elections coming this summer, we are supporting our European employees to vote for our planet, and to mobilise their communities to join them. That means making sure everyone has the time to cast their vote and providing them with educational and inspirational resources. And together with Oatly, we are asking business leaders across Europe to join us. Read our open letter – the planet needs our vote. Jean-Christophe Flatin.

“We have this enormous problem that is threatening the entire world.” Welcome to the age of cheap crap. Our new film The Shitthropocene is a mock anthropological view of humanity’s consumption habits, turning a satirical (yet brutally honest) eye on how everything is turning to shit and why the impulse toward “more” might destroy us all. When Patagonia’s Tin Shed Ventures first invested in Bureo Inc in 2014, we had a hunch it was going to be big. Ten years later, the California startup has kept over 10 million pounds of discarded plastic fishing nets out of the ocean to be turned into recycled materials for clothing and gear. That’s the equivalent poundage of roughly 283 shipping containers or 2.5 million Chicago deep dish pizzas. Bureo got its start transforming fishing nets into material for skateboards and sunglasses. When we linked arms to help them scale, our product innovation team spent years of R&D with Bureo to develop NetPlus material, a recycled nylon worthy of high-quality products such as our Baggies and Down Sweaters, and recycled HDPE for hat brims. Our goal has always been to develop and strengthen waste-based supply chains so other brands can use them, too. As of 2024, more than 20 brands are using NetPlus. It’s powerful proof that product innovation paired with investment can move mountains (of fishing nets). To see how it all started, check out our short film below. https://lnkd.in/gNgVXmD9

Hello, Earth, meet Home Planet Fund. It’s a new nonprofit that will spend every dollar it receives from donors supporting Indigenous communities that know how to prevent climate chaos. An initial $20 million in seed funding from Patagonia covers overhead, so all public donations go directly to those who know their land, and its resilience, best. For 50 years, we've done "business unusual." Now we're trying "philanthropy unusual." Home Planet Fund invests in regions, particularly remote ones, proven by science to keep Earth cool. https://lnkd.in/gj-V2S4R Photo: Colin Arisman

"Banks are at the center of every global transaction, including in the fossil fuel industry. As a client to some of the world's largest financial institutions, Patagonia sees an opportunity to leverage its unique position and hold our financial partners accountable to a path toward net-zero financed emissions." — Charlie Bischoff, Director of Treasury at Patagonia   Your company may be indirectly financing the climate crisis.
