Serving Those Who Served

About us

U.S.VETS is the largest nonprofit organization with boots on the ground to combat America’s veteran homeless crisis head-on. Our holistic approach provides housing, mental health and career programs, and supportive services to help veterans rebuild and thrive. With 40 residential and service sites nationwide, U.S.VETS is uniquely positioned to help veterans and their families successfully transition to civilian life. We provide services to over 3,000 veterans a day. Each year, we help 4,000 veterans a year find housing and connect over 1,000 veterans a year with full-time employment. These struggling veterans represent sons, daughters, mothers, fathers, brothers and sisters. Each has served our country. We share both the pride and problems of this nation’s military servicemen and women and believe we have an obligation to help protect and serve those who have served and protected us. Because of this, we are committed to helping veterans in need. There is a growing generation of veterans with new challenges to face. In the past decade, two million troops have been deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. As they return home, many will experience challenges adjusting back to civilian life. Many returning troops suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or major depression and anxiety. Additionally, some individuals have suffered a probable traumatic brain injury during deployment. The need for support for our nation’s veterans will only continue to increase. Learn how you can help.

Grateful for this continued partnership with A Community of Friends (ACOF) and opportunity to serve Ventura County veterans at the Ventura Springs community. As co-developer and service provider, U.S.VETS is working to ensure veterans and their families experiencing homelessness or at risk of losing stable housing have access to support in a therapeutic community model to help them regain and maintain independence. #servingthosewhoserved

We are thrilled to share the progress of our first project in Ventura County, Ventura Springs, a new apartment community for formerly homeless veterans as well as low-income veterans and their families. With an anticipated completion date of the end of 2024, we look forward to housing veterans and their families as we continue to broaden ACOF's geographic reach. The ten-acre site will be comprised of a total of ten residential buildings which are primarily two-story walk-ups with two three-story elevator buildings. The goal of the project is to create a community that will enrich the lives of local veterans and their families who may have a disability, experienced homelessness, or have economic challenges that have made it difficult to afford quality housing. The site is designed to create a traditional, family-oriented neighborhood where sidewalks are activated by pedestrian pathways and residential front doors that face the street. Of the ten residential buildings, we anticipate leasing up the first seven buildings this fall, with the remaining 3 buildings scheduled for year-end. Our lease-up efforts began in early May with the Housing Authority of the City of San Buenaventura, Veterans Affairs, our co-developer and service provider U.S.VETS, and the Ventura County Continuum of Care. Together, we have started identifying potential applicants, marking a significant milestone in our journey. We look forward to welcoming residents to their new homes soon! Stay tuned for more updates as we move closer to completion and celebrate these exciting developments. Steve Peck, U.S.VETS CEO and Board president of the California Association of Veteran Service Agencies (CAVSA), continued the conversation this week about access to mental health and other services that help prevent veteran homelessness with Toby Ewing, executive director of the Mental Health Services Oversight & Accountability Commission. CAVSA facilitated the discussion focusing on community-based solutions with leaders of member agencies: Akilah Templeton, president and CEO of Veterans Village of San Diego; Chris Johnson, president and CEO of Nation’s Finest; Amy Fairweather, Swords to Plowshares director of policy; and Robert Stohr, executive director of U.S.VETS Patriotic Hall. The talk comes as California prepares for changes envisioned under Prop. 1, including new service-enriched housing for individuals experiencing homelessness and expanded treatment for substance use and mental health disorders. #servingthosewhoserved

A special thank you to Swords to Plowshares for the wonderful visit to our Inland Empire site. It was an invaluable opportunity for our Veteran Support to Self-Reliance Team to engage with and survey the veterans living at our site and enrolled in the VSSR Program. Our Inland Empire team, Gina, Iris, Mike R. and Mike C. take great joy in serving the community of veterans, and our partners Swords to Plowshares, Amy, Pauline and Megan have shown exceptional dedication. Your continued support of the work we do for those who have served our nation is truly appreciated. U.S.VETS Inland Empire

A temporary U.S.VETS service center—opened during construction on 1,200 new Veteran homes at the West Los Angeles VA North Campus—got an extensive refresh this week, thanks to Harbor Freight Tools for Schools and a volunteer corps of high school teachers in the skilled trades. Teachers from across the U.S. built picnic tables, shade structures and walkways, and completed landscape projects around the center as part of Let’s Build It, an annual gathering of educators who receive the Harbor Freight Tools for Schools Prize for Excellence. Upgrades contribute to a therapeutic community and amenities-rich spaces for Veterans experiencing homelessness and those at risk of losing stable housing.  #servingthosewhoserved

For the first time in six years, the Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count by Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority logged a decline in the number of people living on the streets, including a significant drop in homeless veterans. Data released Friday speak to the heart of U.S.VETS’ mission and signal progress in the charge to end #veteran #homelessness. Among findings, the estimated number of 2,991 homeless veterans is down 23% from 2023.

We are deeply disheartened by today’s Supreme Court ruling in #JohnsonVGrantsPass which effectively criminalizes #homelessness. No one should be arrested or fined for sleeping outside when they have no other option. We cannot end homelessness by punishing the people experiencing it. Now more than ever, we need to recommit to intentional solutions that provide our veterans and anyone else experiencing homelessness access to stable housing and the support services to maintain it. #scotus #housingnothandcuffs

LA State Historic Park—with its city skyline vistas and location just minutes from our national office—hosted LA Pride in the Park this month, offering a scenic backdrop for U.S.VETS to raise awareness within LGBTQIA+ communities about services to help veterans manage social, mental, and medical stressors. U.S.VETS is dedicated to providing individualized support including preventative care to help all veterans live with dignity and independence. Led by our Aging Services staff, the day’s community engagement and visibility sparked new connections, and raised critical funds toward Steps for Vets, U.S.VETS’ annual 5K fundraising event to prevent and end veteran homelessness. #ServingThoseWhoServed #HonorUSVETS

U.S.VETS, a member of the CALIFORNIA ASSOCIATION OF VETERAN SERVICE AGENCIES (CAVSA), joined fellow service providers in Sacramento this week when lawmakers declared June California Veterans Awareness Month, acknowledging CAVSA for ongoing work on behalf of veterans. Through housing, coordinated support for veterans with risk factors that can lead to suicide, counseling for post-traumatic stress and substance use disorders, career services and more, CAVSA members address veterans’ needs statewide. U.S.VETS CEO Steve Peck, also the CAVSA Board president, accepted the resolution with leaders of CAVSA member agencies, CAVSA Executive Director Chuck Helget, and California Assemblymembers Eloise Reyes and Pilar Schiavo.  #servingthosewhoserved #honorUSVETS
