It’s time to build artificial intelligence applications. Don’t wait for foundation models to get smarter. Get going. That was one of the consensus messages that emerged from speakers on stage at Cerebral Valley New York Thursday. We hosted around 200 leaders in artificial intelligence yesterday for the third Cerebral Valley AI Summit, alongside our founding partners at Volley. Please join us in welcoming Volley's new Director of Engineering, Rod Begbie! What inspired you to start a career in your line of work? I was given my first computer (a Sinclair ZX Spectrum 48k) in 1983, and it’s all followed on from there. I was lucky — As a scruffy, spectacles-wearing, nerdy boy, I fit the most stereotypical image of a programmer, so society gave me the privilege to always feel comfortable pursuing it. Now I try to invest time and energy in encouraging folks who don’t match the stereotype to explore and take on this exciting, collaborative and impactful career path. What are you looking forward to most about working at Volley? Bringing fun games to smart TV platforms. Millions of households have a smart TV but no games console. Giving them the opportunity to feel like a real gameshow contestant, shouting “What is The Olympic Games?” or “I’d like to solve the puzzle” as they play Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune is terrifically rewarding. And building these games is no easy matter — so solving the hard technology problems to make them fun and accessible will be a challenge I’m excited to take on. As the old saying goes, it takes a lot of effort to make things look effortless!

Please join us in welcoming our new Infrastructure Engineer, Isaiah Lewis, to the Volley Team! What inspired you to start a career in your line of work? "Years ago on Christmas morning, my brother and I were given a Lego Mindstorm- a programmable lego robot on wheels. We were pretty young, and had never seen anything like it. We spent the rest of the day building the robot to look like a spaceship, and programming it to "fly" around my grandparents house, in order to protect our gifts. This was my first real introduction to computing, and it left me with so much curiosity." What are you looking forward to most about working at Volley? "The builder inside me is really looking forward to our Hackathons. I love working on greenfield projects, and having the luxury to create from the ground up is always nice. The backgrounds of our collective team are so incredibly diverse, it's hard to imagine all of the projects that will be schemed up."
