"Transportation is critically important not just in the quality of life and being able to be out and integrate back into society, but things like access to healthcare for us veterans," said Donald Overton, executive director of Blinded Veterans Association (BVA). As the organization gets ready to celebrate 80 years in 2025, members feel excited and empowered by new technology. Listen to three stories of veterans who are blind and low vision on how Waymo autonomous driving technology is a part of that new way forward. From being alone in a car again and benefitting from audio, haptic, and hands-free accessibility features, to avoiding service denials with their guide dogs, Waymo is helping people get where they need to go, safely and independently. https://lnkd.in/eEM4hdwj

That’s a wrap on Waymo Serve Week! 👏 We’re blown away by the 7,700+ hours of community service that Waymonauts volunteered in their communities earlier this month. A huge thank you to our community partners and everyone involved—from beautifying the Palace of Fine Arts with the San Francisco Recreation & Parks Department team, to supporting United Food Bank's Summer of A Million Meals, and building hygiene kits with HealthRIGHT 360. We’re so proud to support and actively participate in the communities where we work and live.

Waymo is proud to support our Head of Sustainability & Environment, Adam L., who is an Ambassador for The American Lung Association's ‘I Wear Turquoise’ Campaign. The virtual event raises funds and awareness around ALA’s fight for the nearly 40% of Americans who live in a community impacted by unhealthy levels of air pollution. Reducing transportation emissions is imperative to improving our air quality, and Waymo’s shared all-electric fleet makes it easier for people to access clean transportation options like our AV ride-hailing service, as well as making streets safer for all road users like pedestrians and bicyclists. New data shows that the Waymo Driver continues to make roads safer. Over 14.8M rider-only miles driven through the end of March, it was up to 3.5x better in avoiding crashes that cause injuries and 2x better in avoiding police-reported crashes than human drivers in SF and Phoenix. Comparing AV and human drivers’ crash rates is not a trivial task. Last December, we introduced clear human benchmarks for such analysis and showed that the Waymo Driver significantly outperformed them over the first 7M+ rider-only miles. New data provides more evidence for the Waymo Driver’s safety benefits. By voluntarily sharing this safety data, beyond regulatory reporting requirements, we hope to enhance transparency and foster trust with our riders and communities we drive in. Learn more about our safety research at https://waymo.com/safety and stay tuned for more safety updates in the coming months.
