Trout Unlimited has a shared conservation mission to “bring together diverse interests to care for and recover rivers and streams so our children can experience the joy of wild native trout and salmon.”
The Director of Institutional Giving serves a key role within the Development Team, and
within the organization. They are primarily responsible for the overall direction and
management of Trout Unlimited’ s (TU’s) foundation and corporate philanthropy programs, and
for delivering the revenue associated with those sources (currently, $14.3M annually). This
includes, but is not limited to, research and cultivation of new and existing funders, stewardship
of grants, extensive knowledge and understanding of TU’s programs and people, complex
proposal and report development, budget development, and administration of TU’s internal
databases. They contribute to the creation and implementation of the cultivation, solicitation
and stewardship of a portfolio of 20-30 foundation and corporate prospects. They interact daily
with Senior Staff and TU’s 350+ field staff located across the United States. They engage with all
levels of TU staff and leadership, and with program officers of foundations and corporations.
They manage a team of foundation and corporate relations officers who each carry portfolios
with $2.5 - 5M annual revenue goals. The position is remote.

Duties And Responsibilities
- Develop, maintain, and execute a strategy for donors that ensures growth and stable funds for TU. Works collaboratively with leadership to ensure alignment on strategy and execution.
- Directly manage a portfolio of 20-30 high-level institutional prospects.
- Utilize foundation research tools, such as Foundation Search America and Foundation Directory Online, to identify new foundations for program funding.
- Draft, edit and review – in collaboration with field staff – proposals, budgets, financial statements, and reports that adhere letters of interest to fundraising and TU’s best practices and standards.
- Review and understand the terms of awarded grant agreements and work with related staff across Trout Unlimited to ensure grant compliance. Effectively steward all current grants.
- Lead cross-functional collaborations to secure less restricted, more flexible support for multi-disciplinary projects that support TU’s mission.
- Develop briefing materials, correspondences, and talking points for senior staff and conservation partners.
- Create stewardship plan for current donors to ensure engagement and continued giving.
- Administer TU’s grants management database to track spending, outcomes, and facilitate reporting.
- Interface with the Accounting staff and others in Administration on grants management and compliance.
- Supervise and mentor a team of 3 staff, and potentially more as the team grows over time. Collaborate on donor strategy and management, as needed, and ensure team’s performance is on track to deliver expected revenue.
- Generate about half of the development department’s revenue (about $12-14M annually), and work with VP for Development and other stakeholders to prepare organizational revenue and expense budgets, projections, and reports as needed.
- 10 or more years of experience with institutional philanthropy and grants management, and a minimum of three years in a supervisory role within a development function.
- Experience growing an institutional giving program.
- Excellent written and verbal communicator, with ability to synthesize complex material.
- Excellent collaborator, with track record of working across stakeholders.
- Knowledge of foundation research tools.
- Highly organized and able to track multiple grants in-process.
- Able to work independently, and within deadlines.
- Ability to translate complex data for internal and external stakeholders.
- Exceptionally detail oriented.
- Experience in the suite of Office365 tools.
- Experience for working with donor database systems.
- Experience with Adobe Acrobat and creating/combining PDFs.
- Bachelor’s degree a requirement.
- Knowledge of foundation grants protocols preferred.
- Strong environmental, conservation, and clean water ethic and commitment to TU’s mission.
