Onboarding: The next generation of Low Carbon Solutions talent This is an ongoing series where we’ll meet some of the new talent who joined Low Carbon Solutions over the past year. We’ll learn about what motivates them to work in the energy transition and get a glimpse into their new roles. First up is Abhinav Charan, head of commercial optimization in CCS. His current role in one sentence: He helps optimize the CCS ecosystem in the U.S. Gulf Coast. Why he chose Low Carbon Solutions: “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to come to an organization that has the wherewithal and the capabilities to really drive the energy transition, build a compelling new business, and frankly, drive market creation. It’s truly exciting to be in the middle of the action and help shape the energy transition story as it unfolds.” Abhinav’s view on the CCS ecosystem in the U.S. Gulf Coast: “The Gulf Coast is the leading global hub for low carbon solutions. You're able to leverage some of the CO2 policy around carbon capture and sequestration and use that as a monetization pathway for emissions or leverage the enhanced oil recovery pathway, or even look at industrial sales to use carbon dioxide for various product uses across a diverse set of industries. So ultimately you end up with a commodity that can be leveraged in different ways to create value for the corporation and society. And this ties back directly to the whole equation that we’re working towards: We’re driving the energy transition to help society get to net zero, and also building a compelling business that creates and maximizes value from this opportunity.” Two words that describe your job: “Energizing and exciting in the same go.” Interested in joining Abhinav to be at the center of making a difference today? For broad industrial decarbonization, carbon capture and storage (CCS) is a critical tool to help reach emission targets. At the same time, we recognize that the market faces challenges in adopting CCS, including insufficient economic incentives, regulatory uncertainty, and the high cost of deploying technology. During the recent Carbon Capture Technology Expo North America, Carl Fortin highlighted how ExxonMobil is making significant progress to help grow the CCS market and address some of the pain points customers are facing. --Work progresses on our three USGC CCS projects to deliver on definitive customer agreements reached over the past 18 months. --With our acquisition of Denbury Inc., we now have the largest owned and operated CO2 pipeline network in the world, approximately 925 miles of which are in the US Gulf Coast industrial corridor, bringing customers the benefits of a transportation and storage network. --Our strategic technology collaborations with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Honeywell UOP strengthen our ability to provide scalable end-to-end CCS solutions that open up the market. We know that low-carbon-intensity hydrogen has the potential to play a critical role in helping industrial manufacturing sectors reduce their emissions. But turning potential into powerful, real-world solutions requires significant investment, technological innovation, collaboration, and policy support. At the recent Hydrogen Technology Expo North America, Steve Kellogg highlighted how we’ve made extraordinary strides in the past year to address these challenges and advance low-carbon-intensity hydrogen as a commercially viable option for customers. • We’re planning to build the world’s largest low-carbon-intensity hydrogen facility at our world scale Baytown Refining and Chemical complex and use that hydrogen to reduce carbon emissions at the facility by up to 30%. We are using the expertise from this milestone project to support our customers. • Our Baytown Olefins Plant will utilize Zeeco, Inc. FREE JET® Gen 3™ hydrogen burners in combination with steam cracker technology to burn close to 100% hydrogen with ultra-low NOx emissions. Both technologies are available to our customers. • We’re pursing more than $20 billion in lower-emission investments from 2022 through 2027. About 50% of our lower-emission investments are targeted at reducing emissions from operated assets, with the balance going toward reducing the emissions of other companies. Alongside SK On, we are pleased to announce we've signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding (MOU) to explore a multi-year lithium offtake agreement of up to 100,000 metric tons of Mobil™ Lithium from our company’s first planned project in southern Arkansas. SK On is a global leading electric vehicle (EV) battery developer and plans to use the Mobil Lithium in its battery manufacturing operation plants in the U.S. Two are already established and SK On has plans to develop four more EV battery plants in various states. This non-binding MOU supports goals for both companies: --ExxonMobil Low Carbon Solutions' goal of supplying lithium for about 1 million EV batteries annually by 2030 and support the U.S. initiative to build out a domestic EV supply chain. --After 2025, the annual production capacity of SK On in the U.S. is expected to reach more than 180 GWh: enough to power about 1.7 million EVs annually. From our ExxonMobil Low Carbon Solutions President, Dan Ammann: “The world needs more lithium to support its emissions goals, and we’re doing our part to drive solutions forward in the United States. This collaboration with SK On demonstrates the leading role we play in the growing market for domestically sourced lithium, a market that’s advancing energy security and climate objectives, as well as supporting American manufacturing.” Meeting demand in today’s energy transition. #realworldprogress.
