Congratulations to J.Crew and Madewell on their first ESG report. We're proud to contribute to their progress through our circularity program, and celebrate their commitment to combating the climate crisis. In 2023 alone, over 362,000 Madewell garments were collected via our Clean Out kits, saving the equivalent emissions of 5.1 million miles driven. We look forward to J.Crew Group's continued progress.

ICYMI: The world now throws out 92 million tons of clothes a year and only about an eighth of it gets recycled, according to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation. What happens to the rest? They either hit landfill or are burned... Now, researchers at the University of Delaware are proposing a new recycling technique that breaks down blended fabrics using chemicals and microwaves. Researchers say the process takes 15 minutes and can dissolve any blend of cotton, polyester, nylon and spandex into molecules that can be used to make new fabrics or products like dyes, electronics and tires. While this would be a huge game changer, we still need to address the way fast fashion produces apparel - both in terms of quality and quantity. Read more in The Washington Post

The fashion industry is one of the dirtiest industries that exist. The industry itself is responsible for roughly ten percent of GHG emissions, and fast fashion’s impact not only contributes to that percentage, but is the leading force. Today, Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-Maine), ranking member of the House Appropriations Interior and Environment Subcommittee, alongside Reps. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D-Wash.) and Sydney Kamlager-Dove (D-Calif.), announced the first-ever Congressional Slow Fashion Caucus to curb fast fashion pollution through climate-smart policies; a huge step in the fight against the climate crisis. This morning, the Members held a press conference to launch the platform and invited ThredUp's Chief Legal Officer Alon Rotem to deliver the opening remarks. “The launch of the Slow Fashion Caucus gives us a powerful new platform to forge ahead. Together we can drive the fashion policy agenda forward and change the incentive structures to benefit our shared planet and resources,” Alon said in his remarks. Thank you to the Congresswoman Pingree for inviting ThredUp to a part of this incredibly crucial platform, and to Rachel Seville Tashjian and The Washington Post for diving into what the Slow Fashion Caucus has set out to do.

Thank you Innovation Forum and Kelly A. Burton for having ThredUp's Chief Legal Officer Alon Rotem join Day 2 of the Sustainable Apparel and Textiles Conference in NYC. Alon shared his insights on where shoppers rank environmental causes on their priority list and whether their values make it past checkout, and how often those perceptions can change. It was a thought-provoking conversation and we were honored to be a part of it.

Thank you to WWD and Evan Clark for sharing our news that we announced this morning. While the adoption of resale continues to rise, so do the stakes when it comes to customer experience. Fashion has a dark side, but secondhand is playing an important role in combating industry waste. Thank you Aaron Heslehurst for inviting our CEO James Reinhart to participate in a discussion about sustainable fashion on BBC News and helping spread awareness around how ThredUp is disrupting the traditional, linear ecommerce model; how brands can incorporate circularity into their strategies; and what AI is doing to improve the secondhand shopping journey and encourage more shoppers to choose used.
