From degraded lands to a thriving forest 🌳 We're excited to share an update on nature’s resilience in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Six years ago, our partner Primate Expertise (PEx) and community members planted seedlings from the Ape Trees™ project in degraded areas around Kahuzi-Biega National Park. Today, these trees have transformed the area into a small forest. Even more exciting, the PEx team has observed wildlife returning to this newly planted forest, highlighting the success of restoration efforts. This demonstration field in Maziba village has become a symbol of hope for the community. What happens to newly hatched sea turtles after they enter the ocean? The Lost Years Project by Equilibrio Azul is shedding light on the enigmatic early life of one of the world’s most endangered sea turtles—hawksbills. Using innovative technology like tiny acoustic and satellite tags, the project is uncovering the behaviors of elusive baby hawksbills in the eastern Pacific. Wild Earth Allies botanist Steven Brewer recently returned to Silk Grass Wildlife Preserve to continue research on “The Trees of Belize," a project we are supporting to inventory the biodiverse canopy of our first-growth rainforest. Here Steven is with Silk Grass Farms co-founder Peter Kjellerup discussing the anatomy of a plant specimen from the Belizian rainforest. This work will inform our conservation planning and rainforest management, a critical component of our commitment to developing a circular economy where agriculture and environment exist in harmony. New sustainable enterprises are underway in Cameroon's Dja Biosphere Reserve. 🌱 In collaboration with our partner The African Conservation and Development Foundation (ACDEF), three community groups recently launched agricultural projects to grow cassava and plantains. These initiatives, designed and led by local community members, emphasize sustainable land use practices. We joined forces with ACDEF and 13 communities near the reserve to protect wildlife and improve livelihoods. Our collaborative efforts are starting to bear fruit, and there's so much more on the horizon! Welcome Cambodia’s newest species—the royal cave bent-toed gecko! Wild Earth Allies was thrilled to collaborate with the Ministry of Environment, North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, IUCN, the Royal University of Phnom Penh, and La Sierra University to help describe this gecko, Cyrtodactylus regicavernicolus.
