Making your world a safer place.
About us
Citizen is the No. 1 public safety app in the U.S., with a mission to make the world a safer place. Citizen provides 911 alerts so people can use their phones to keep themselves, and the people and places they love, safe. Citizen has notified people to evacuate burning buildings, deterred school buses from nearby terrorist attacks, and led to the rescue of kidnapped children and missing people. Citizen’s 911 alerts are accompanied by live stories, real-time updates, and user-generated content so app users never have to wonder why there are helicopters overhead or fire engines flying by. By broadcasting from the scene of an incident, communicating with one another, and reading live updates, communities are empowered by Citizen. We act fast, break news, and give people the immediate information they need to stay safe. And we’re just getting started. Our flagship paid product—Citizen Premium—is a only-of-its-kind personal safety subscription that allows users to reach a digital guardian 24/7 for $20/mo. Subscribers used Citizen Premium to guide emergency response to remote hiking locations, or travel safely on late-night walks. Citizen Plus, which sits between the free Citizen app and Citizen Premium at $5/mo, currently unlocks 6 new features. Available for the first time ever, Citizen Plus includes the powerful ability to listen to police and fire radios, customize your alerts, unlock past incidents, create alert zones, view nearby registered offenders, and see crime statistics. Already relied on by millions of people every day, Citizen will expand even further across the United States this year to keep more users safe and informed. We’re looking for hardworking, mission-driven individuals to help bring Citizen to hundreds of cities nationwide. Citizen is backed by 8VC, Founders Fund, Goodwater Capital, and Greycroft and has raised tens of millions in VC funding. https://vimeo.com/499700748

Support The "Keep police radio public act" Senate Bill S7759A
Wow! Take a look at this screenshot from Apple's app store today. In the news category, citizen-powered apps are outshining major news outlets. What's interesting is that Citizen, Watch Duty, Police Scanner Radio & Fire, and Police Scanner: Fire Radio all are possible in part, due to public scanner traffic. This is the same scanner chatter journalists have relied on for ages, but now it's facing a major privacy and safety dilemma. Many first responders are encrypting their radio communications, which could have a big impact on these popular apps and public access to critical information. While reporting for Government Technology I learned how John Clarke Mills built Watch Duty in response to a need for that kind of critical information when a wildfire threatened his home. Orange County Fire Authority Chief Brian Fennessy uses the app and mentioned in our interview that he actually regrets encrypting their fire service channels. He wants to reverse the decision, but it's not easy. Read the full story here: https://lnkd.in/ePTZCr3g Let's Discuss: Should all first responders encrypt their radio traffic? What are the cybersecurity risks and benefits involved? Sound off with your expertise! #govtech #journalism #radioencryption #publicsafety

Can’t believe a year has passed since I joined Citizen! The grind and scrappiness is unparalleled, but I love 🖤 nearly every part of my job. Looking back 388 days 🗓️, I joined Citizen because it 🚑 protects people’s lives everyday, ⛑️ makes the world a safer place, 🧩 interfaces with very challenging problems to solve, 🙆🏻♀️ appeals to an enormous TAM, and consists of an incredibly🔥 passionate and 💦 hardworking team. All of that remains true and I’m so glad I made the right call 👩🏻⚖️. Citizen is not for the faint-hearted. It is tough, it’s a hustle, it’s a grind. If you’re up for the challenge, I’m #hiring for an accounting manager to elevate our game! 🚀 Come join our VC-backed team alongside Greycroft, Goodwater, 8VC and others! 🙌🏻 Special shoutout to our in-office team this week: Stewart Easterby, Kathryn Hart, Brenton D., Sasha Rampersaud, Jessica Yuan, Olivia Hughes, Jeanette Kim, Juliana Pignataro, Morgan Mathiesen, Dennis Prince Mapp, and AK Ring!

Thank you University of California, Berkeley students for trusting Citizen with your safety. When every second counts, receiving real-time safety alerts is critical. 📲 #UCBerkeley #Citizen #CampusSafety #Alerts
I'm very disappointed of the campus shooting that occurred in University of California, Berkeley a week ago. A man pulled out a gun and fired into the air after his demands for the music to be turned down and for a phone charger went unmet, leading to a heated altercation. Police officers were already in the scene, arresting the man within a minute after firing the gun. Although there were no injuries reported, this raises questions and concerns about UC Berkeley's emergency notification system, WarnMe. Let's talk about the delays of WarnMe, a notification system in the UC Berkeley community that automatically sends notifications to students when a significant emergency or dangerous situation occurring on the campus that involves an immediate threat to the health or safety of students. WarnMe is also used to send timely warnings and community advisories from campus police (UCPD). After shots were fired near student-interacted area, the campus sent an emergency WarnMe notification via email regarding the incident, which was delayed for approximately 40 minutes. The notification described the incident as an "aggravated assault," with no mention of the shots fired or even urging students to shelter in place in campus building or residence halls. However, students were able to get firsthand updates through another mobile app, Citizen, that sends users location-based safety alerts in real time. The real question is, how can we trust the campus to protect their students when the WarnMe system failed to notify students immediately on an incident that could cause potential threat to the safety of students? #ucberkeley #students #campussafety #shooting
