Today, we honor Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day. On June 19, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced the end of slavery, marking the true emancipation of enslaved African Americans. This day–two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation–celebrates freedom, education, and achievement, while honoring the rich culture and resilience of the African American community. Team Mindgrub invites you to join us in honoring and celebrating Juneteenth. Here are some of our favorite ways to celebrate: 🎨 Explore your city’s murals and public art celebrating African American history and culture. 🍴Support local Black-owned businesses, restaurants, and shops. 📚 Join (or start!) a book club focusing on works by African American authors or on the topics of slavery and freedom. 💪 Engage in community service projects that uplift and collaborate with African American communities and leaders. 🌟 Participate in local advocacy efforts promoting racial equality and justice. 🎷 Celebrate with parades, festivals, and street fairs featuring music, dance, food, and other cultural expressions. 🖼️ Visit a local museum showcasing African American artists, history, and African or Caribbean culture. 📽️ Watch a documentary or film highlighting African American history and the significance of Juneteenth with friends.
