WHYY is your local, Member-supported NPR and PBS station, delivering information, entertainment and education.

About us

WHYY makes our region a better place, connecting each of us to the world's richest ideas and all of us to each other through Member-supported public media. Through WHYY-FM 90.9, WHYY-TV 12 and WHYY.org, we reach 1.3 million people on average each week in the Greater Philadelphia area. We are your local PBS and NPR member station, bringing you long-time favorite programs, such as Masterpiece and All Things Considered. But our national programs are only the tip of the iceberg. WHYY Studios produces more than a dozen local programs, such as Fresh Air with Terry Gross, You Oughta Know and The Connection with Marty Moss-Coane. We offer a robust regional news service supported by an award-winning newsroom, home to Billy Penn, PlanPhilly and the WHYY Climate Desk. We are deeply committed to the needs of young people. Many people’s first experience with WHYY is watching our award-winning PBS Kids television programs as a child. We also teach thousands of kids to make videos in 40+ local schools and at our studio. We bring together people in the region for interesting and fun events in person and online. From critical community conversations to advanced screenings with big personalities, keep an eye on WHYY.org/events for things to do all year round. Of course, all of this is only possible through Member support.

Anjoli Santiago has always had a conflicted relationship with religion. Church made her feel like she belonged… until it didn’t. Now, she’s seeking a new spirituality that’s inspired by water. So she’s blown away by an image that seems to bring her two spiritualities together: a church, floating on the Delaware River. Hear her story on the Philadelphia Revealed podcast: https://lnkd.in/eJfVpPBR Philadelphia Revealed is an exhibition, a podcast, and a platform for anyone to add their story to Philly history. The exhibition runs July 18 – December 1 at Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and features a large, interactive display of over 600 objects from the Atwater Kent Collection at Drexel University. Ten of these objects inspire the First Person Arts storytellers you’ll hear on the podcast.

We're thrilled to introduce our newest podcast, Peak Travel! Travel can do amazing things: broaden horizons, build relationships, and rejuvenate the soul. But often, those experiences come at a cost. Peak Travel unpacks the tourism industry, investigating how travel shapes communities in hot-spots around the world. We’ll share the wonder that comes with exploring new places, as well as the harm that our worst travel habits can cause. And we’ll try to figure out how we can do it better. Hosted by travel reporter Tariro Mzezewa. Episodes drop every Tuesday starting July 23! Listen to the trailer: https://bit.ly/3WsUPuX

    • A podcast tile for "Peak Travel" designed like a classic postcard. A person with a phone looking out at the horizon stands on a pile of other people: a flight attendant with a tray of wine glasses, a chef, an official, a person with a suitcase, and a hiker with a pickaxe. Despite receiving record-level funding in recent years, SEPTA lags behind its peers in annual capital investments. While the transportation authority wants to modernize its fleet, it struggles with reduced ridership and its riders regularly have concerns about increased violent crimes and drug use onboard and at stations and stops. How does our region ensure safe, equitable and accessible public transportation for all, while keeping fares affordable and maintaining existing services? Join us for “Transforming Public Transit,” a Bridging Blocks community conversation from WHYY and Free Library of Philadelphia. Register here: https://bit.ly/4cWRFWy

We are excited to announce the 71 Every Voice, Every Vote coalition members receiving $2.875 million to expand access to civic news and information in 2024 and 2025. These 71 Philadelphia media organizations and community groups are launching journalism and civic engagement projects that connect residents to local government, amplify voices from Philadelphia communities, and track the progress of the city’s new administration. They will be joined in these efforts by dozens more coalition members, including local social media creators and additional media and community organizations. This phase of the coalition's work builds on our success leading up to the 2023 municipal elections. In 2024 and 2025, the coalition is focused on the day-to-day activities that strengthen communities and democracy. To do this, we are committed to the following calls to action: -Be heard: Let public officials and fellow community members know our priorities — at the polls and in our neighborhoods.   -Be engaged: Participate in town halls and civic engagement events to dive deep into the issues that matter most.   -Be accountable: Transcend apathy and ensure public officials and communities are doing their part.   -Take action: Make change in small and big ways: sign petitions, show up to public meetings, unite our neighborhoods around important issues. Lead support for Every Voice, Every Vote in 2024 and 2025 is provided by the William Penn Foundation with additional funding from Lenfest Institute for Journalism, Comcast NBC Universal, The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, Henry L. Kimelman Family Foundation, Judy and Peter Leone, Arctos Foundation, Wyncote Foundation, 25th Century Foundation, and Dolfinger-McMahon Foundation. https://lnkd.in/gZKPgmff
