North Sea energy firms look beyond UK after tax squeeze
North Sea oil and gas producers are merging and shifting overseas as Britain's windfall tax slashes profits and as the opposition Labour Party threatens more tax if it wins the next general election.
The change of strategy could accelerate the decline of domestic production, risking increased dependency on imports, greater vulnerability to higher consumer prices and more job losses.
Oil majors such as Shell , Chevron , and ExxonMobil have long since pulled back from the ageing basin in pursuit of more profitable oilfields, divesting assets to smaller producers such as Harbour Energy , Ithaca Energy , and Serica Energy plc .
These independent oil and gas producers are now looking further afield and merging to cut costs and boost revenue.
"Unfortunately, the UK government has turned the UK North Sea into a very harsh business environment," Gilad Myerson , executive chairman of Ithaca Energy, one of the largest North Sea producers, told Reuters last month.
In 2022, the UK imposed a 25% Energy Profit Levy on the sector after a jump in energy prices resulting from Russia's invasion of Ukraine swelled profits as consumers faced higher prices, following similar measures in other European countries.

Malaysian Wealth Fund Sues PetroSaudi CEO for $1.8 Billion Over Oil “Sham”
The scandalized Malaysian sovereign wealth fund 1MBD has filed a lawsuit against PetroSaudi International CEO Patrick Mahoney for $1.83 billion over what it says was a sham oil exploration joint venture.
According to the lawsuit, 1MBD (1Malaysia Development Berhad) had been led to believe that Petrosaudi was owned by Saudi royalty, which served as the basis upon which the fund agreed to the JV deal.
The joint venture “was a sham which resulted in 1MDB suffering a complete loss of its investment” of US$1.83 billion, 1MBD said in the lawsuit, calling for Mahoney to be held liable for the damages because of his “dishonest assistance” in relation to the 2009 joint venture, according to 1MBD, as reported by The Malaysian Reserve on Thursday.
The lawsuit represents lower-level damage control after the Fund became embroiled in a multi-billion-dollar global corruption scandal.
Swiss prosecutors have accused Mahoney and a Saudi-Swiss businessman also named in the lawsuit of fraudulently claiming to be negotiating on behalf of the late Saudi King Abdullah and of fraudulently claiming to have controlling rights to an oilfield in the Caspian Sea.
Mahoney and his Saudi-Swiss counterpart will plead not guilty

Siemens Gamesa 15 MW Wind Turbines for Iberdrola’s Windanker Offshore Wind Farm, Havfram Contracted for Installation
Iberdrola ’s third offshore wind farm in the Baltic Sea, Windanker, will comprise 21 Siemens Gamesa wind turbines, each with a generation capacity of 15 MW. The turbines will be installed by Havfram , with the work scheduled to start in the summer of 2026.
Havfram said on 21 May that it signed a contract with Iberdrola for the transport and installation of wind turbines on the German project and that the company would use one of its newbuild NG20000X-HF wind turbine installation vessels for the work.
“The contract will start in the summer of 2026 and makes a perfect fit towards high utilization for the vessel planned to be used,” Havfram stated in a press release.
The NG20000X-HF vessels will be among the largest wind installation jack-ups in the industry, according to the company, which placed an order for the first jack-up with CIMC-Raffles in 2022. The agreement Havfram has with Yantai CIMC Raffles Offshore Ltd. includes options for the construction of up to four NG20000X-HF vessels.

Biomass fermentation space heats up as Enifer raises $39m to scale mycoprotein plant in Finland
Finnish startup Enifer has raised €36 million ($39.1 million) from a mix of debt and equity to fund a large-scale facility growing a source of mycoprotein that was first commercialized as animal feed 50 years ago.
The funding package includes a €15 million ($16.2 million) series B equity round led by the Finnish private equity fund Taaleri Bioindustry Fund I, with follow-on investments from existing shareholders Nordic Foodtech VC, Voima Ventures, and dairy giant Valio.
Enifer has also secured a €7 million ($7.6 million) junior loan from the Finnish Climate Fund; a €2 million ($2.2 million) climate and environmental loan from Finnvera; and a previously reported €12 million ($13 million) grant from Business Finland.

Rolls-Royce’s nuclear power vision is a step closer with launch of new manufacturing facility
Rolls-Royce SMR is partnering with the University of Sheffield to launch a new facility to manufacture and test prototype modules for its small modular reactor (SMR) nuclear power plants.
The Rolls-Royce SMR Module Development Facility, which will be based in the The University of Sheffield AMRC Factory 2050, will produce working prototypes of individual modules that will be assembled into Rolls-Royce SMR power plants.
The initial phase, worth £2.7m, of this £15m deal with the University of Sheffield will see Rolls-Royce produce three prototype modules by the end of this year.
Rolls-Royce SMR is offering a different approach to delivering new nuclear power that is easier to scale and more affordable than building larger nuclear power plants.
It’s an approach that aims to deliver an entirely factory-built nuclear power plant that would be transported as modules and assembled on-site, radically reducing construction activity and making the SMR a commodifiable product.
While unique within the nuclear industry, this modular approach is widely used and well proven across the oil and gas and renewables sectors.
Each SMR, assembled from hundreds of factory-built modules, will be capable of providing enough low-carbon electricity to power a million homes for more than 60 years.

Ameresco to deliver 300MW UK battery
Ameresco has entered into a $249m contract and long-term service agreement with Atlantic Green for a 300MW battery energy storage system (BESS) project in the UK.
The scheme, which will use Envision Energy 's BESS technology, is scheduled to break ground by mid-2024.
Atlantic Green selected Ameresco and Envision Energy to deliver the Cellarhead project, after competitive tender.
The Cellarhead BESS will be connected to National Grid’s Cellarhead substation and will provide the UK with additional energy security and reliability, said the developer.
Connection to the electricity grid is anticipated at the end of 2026.
With a maximum energy capacity of 624 megawatt hours, the battery will support the increased penetration of clean energy generation, added the developer.
