Rooted in national best practices, we built the Birmingham Promise from scratch. That was five years ago and it feels like we are just earning traction. In a recent Forbes article titled "The Birmingham Promise: Preparing Youth For College And Career Success, "Michael T. Nietzel writes, "Incorporated in 2019, with the first participants coming on board in 2020, the program is an example of a comprehensive effort designed to help students achieve educational and work success after graduating from high school, and it's emerging as a model for how cities can create a successful free-college program for local students." Nietzel goes on to explain how Birmingham Promise's efforts to support students are leading to impressive response rates with 682 of 1,100 of students applying this year. What's happening around the world is important. What's happening in our nation is important. What's happening in Alabama is important. What's happening in Jefferson County is important. What's happening in the City of Birmingham is important. But, is anything more important to you than what is happening in your own neighborhood? The house to the left of you. The house to the right of you. I am pre-occupied with problem-solving for our residents no matter what else is happening in the world. We are piloting a new solution for Birmingham's #EastLake neighborhood. It's called 'Safe Streets' and it's about more than just rooting out violent crime, illegal dumping, and prostitution. It's also about seeding hope. And, it's about supporting residents who seek to restore pride where they reside. And, yeah, it's about reducing #gunviolence. Take a look. #puttingpeoplefirst https://lnkd.in/gG5gMdbQ

We live in a nation led by people with strong opinions on every side of the aisle. I'm not even sure there is an aisle these days. But, there is always room for leaders to find common ground for the sake of the people they serve. I found some common ground on adding more jobs in the fastest growing part of Alabama's economy with Governor Ivey, Senator Katie Britt, and Congresswoman Terri Sewell. Birmingham is uniquely positioned to secure Alabama's economic future through #biotech. #alabama #nationalsecurity #cities #bipartisan #innovation #birminghamalabama #puttingpeoplefirst https://lnkd.in/gDqWwnfb

Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport - BHM recently unveiled a new air cargo facility in #birmingham. Among its uses, the 53,000-square-foot site will be home to international cargo flights from Stuttgart, Germany via global logistics company Kuehne+Nagel. The Birmingham Times reports, "This new partnership at BHM signals a growing trend of using secondary markets to move air cargo in the United States. Smaller airports that have the infrastructure in place and the warehousing capacity to offer are capitalizing on an industry need to get cargo out to customers faster, cheaper, and on a more predictable schedule than is possible at larger, more congested airports." #puttingpeoplefirst Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gT2T7zBY
