XTI Aerospace, announced last week that Mesa Air Group, the holding company of regional air carrier Mesa Airlines, is purchasing up to 100 TriFan 600 aircraft, reports a press release. If all conditions are met and the order is fully exercised, it could represent close to USD1 billion in revenue for XTI. Mesa is also becoming an investor in the aerospace company with warrants and a minority stake in company shares. Scott Pomeroy, Chair and CEO of XTI, commented, “We are excited to have secured this conditional pre-order and position from Mesa Airlines and believe it serves as further validation of the substantial and untapped market for our aircraft. GPMS International has achieved a significant milestone with the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) granting supplemental type certificates (STCs) for Foresight MX HUMS on Airbus H135 and AS332 Super Puma helicopters. This expansion follows successful collaboration with industry leaders like Blackcomb Helicopters, Precision, and Metro Aviation, Inc., crucial in achieving these certifications. Ronnie Ries, VP of Marketing at GPMS, expressed gratitude, stating, "We appreciate the dedicated support from Blackcomb Helicopters and Precision, and we’re excited to see them monitoring their fleets with Foresight MX. SANTA CLARA, Calif. /June 12, 2024 /Archer Aviation -- Archer Aviation Inc. (NYSE:ACHR), a leader in electric vertical takeoff and landing (#eVTOL) aircraft, today announced that on June 8th its Midnight aircraft successfully completed transition flying at a speed of 100+ mph. Archer has now achieved transition with two different full-scale eVTOL aircraft. #Transition is well known in the industry as a very difficult milestone few companies have reached. At ~6,500 lbs, Midnight is believed to be one of the largest eVTOL aircraft to complete transition, which is critical to being able to carry commercially viable passenger payloads. A transition flight occurs when the aircraft takes off vertically like a helicopter, accelerates forward, transitions from thrust-borne to wing-borne flight like an airplane with tilt propellers forward before decelerating and landing vertically. Midnight’s flight test program will now continue its progress with plans to fly simulated commercial routes to demonstrate the aircraft’s operational readiness, executing high-rate flight operations, testing additional flight maneuvers that will be used in commercial settings along with continuing to expand its speed and endurance flight envelope. Archer continues to make certification progress as the company has now received its Part 135 and Part 145 certificates from the FAA. Additionally, Archer is one of two companies in the world to have its final airworthiness criteria for an eVTOL aircraft issued by the #FAA. Midnight is now in the final “implementation” phase of its Type #Certification program with piloted flight testing on track to begin later this year. Archer’s goal is to transform urban travel, replacing 60–90-minute commutes by car with estimated 10–20-minute electric air taxi flights that are safe, sustainable, low noise, and cost-competitive with ground transportation. Addressing the Aviation Maintenance Technician Shortage: A Crucial Step for the Industry’s Future The aviation sector is on the road to recovery post-pandemic, but a significant challenge persists: a shortage of aviation maintenance technicians (AMTs). Current estimates suggest a shortfall of 12,000 to 18,000 AMTs, which could persist or even worsen over the next decade. Factors like an aging workforce, low career uptake, and rising passenger demand (IATA predicts 8.2 billion passengers by 2037) are contributing to this gap. Boeing’s 2021 Commercial Market Outlook indicates that 610,000 new AMTs will be needed globally through 2041, with the trade association ADS saying that there are currently 10,000 vacancies in the UK alone. To meet this demand, the industry must increase the number of trained AMTs by at least 20% above those already being trained. Strategies to address this could include: ✈️ Increasing financial compensation: Making the role more attractive by acknowledging the high skill and training required. ✈️ Diversifying recruitment efforts: Expanding marketing to underrepresented groups (currently, <10% of aviation and aerospace engineers are female, for example). ✈️ Mentorship programs: Leveraging the experience of current professionals to guide and inspire the next generation.
